why are they so much more expensive here?

The only real store that gets big loaches here in Indy is The Reef and all of their prices are kind of high. Uncle Bill's gets them occasionally, but they don't always look very healthy.

thats wierd, the only place that has them in my area is petsmart :screwy: my exotic LFS rarely ever have any.

Your LFS may have a loach keeper that is fanatical, mine does :D

Yeah, that sounds about right. It's rare to find any over 4'' here in SoCal, but I've seen 6 inchers maybe two or three times.

Some petshop here has a tank for reject fish(aka fish that have been returned for being to big ect) so i say the tank and it was full of oscars and a huge loach , i got lucky as it was dirt cheap.

The advantage of working at an LFS is that we get these every once in while. The reason you don't see them is either the employees buy them right off, or customers do if there isn't a loach nut on staff...My coworkers know that if a loach comes in at 4" or better, they bag it and call me.

That's a horrible way to do business and even worse that the owner of your LFS lets you do that to your customers. I do hope you give your customers a sincere chance to buy the fish before you do.

That's the only reason I work there. I get to cherry pick the stock. Why else would I work at a minimum wage job where the temperature is about 90 deg F and the humidity is 100%? I'm sure the employees at your favorite LFS don't work there because they have dreams of becoming rich in the fish business.

Chicagoland....

1" $6.99 ea. Sometimes 2 for $9.00
2" about the same
3" $14.99
4" $24.99 and up depending on shop.
5" $29.99+, usually in as a trade, and fairly low priced, very rare.
6" Leprechaun range and super rare.
(never saw any for sale, only in show tanks and NFS)

Have seen a few trade bait 4"ers @ 20 bucks. Went back an hour later and someone picked them up.

Moral... Pulll the trigger.

I found a nice one at Petco of all places. He looked so sad in the tank and stressed out. The clown loach was pushing five inches.

From asking the "aquatic specialist" (aka knows nothing on fish) he said that the loach was a return and was for sale at the price of a donation to the ASPCA.

I offered to buy but then mysteriously another employee "had dibs to it." The same store did that crap with me when they had a 55g with stand for $49. Luckily five days before I managed to get a 6.5" Albino Bichir for donation (aka $5) before the boneheads found her.

Moral... Petco is terrible to customers.
