Does any of you use a UV Strlyzr w/their XP3's? I picked mine up off of Craigs list. 2 for $75.
I run my UV thru my XP3. It's working great and no problem.

Ok so i did a little research on 3 filters for you.

The Follow is information pulled off Google and are as follows:

Rena Xp3 Filter specs:
$110 US dollars
350gph
2 US gallon cap.
19Watts
Max head 5.25ft (questionable)
3 baskets

Rena Xp4 specs:
$205 US dollars
450gph
3 US gallon cap.
23 watts
Max Head 6.5ft (questionable)
4 baskets

Fluval Fx5 Specs
$280 (can be found Cheaper but i wanted to use the readily availible price as i did the others)
925gph
1.5 US gallon cap.
48 Watts
Max head 10.8ft
3 baskets

Now let me explain why i think the max head is Questionable for the Rena Filters. I bought a Xp4 thinking it would be good buy seeings how i was getting it for 200 bucks over 3 years ago and it just couldn't push the 5ft From my Floor to edge of tank for more than 20 minutes. It would incresingly slow down in flow rate. Once it lost its flow stretgh it would just give up and stop. Now i thought it might of been defective so i took it back to the store and got another one. Well Long story short it did the very same thing as teh first.
I decide to look for another Canister and was told to look at the Fx5 by Fluval. I was told it was about another 100 buck more but it will do what im asking of the canister and wont stop. Its been 3 years now with mine and i cant say ive had an problems with mine and it always relieves the air from the system (hardly ever is any so i never notice its even there). I cant be more happy with my Fx5. I will never again try and save a buck when it comes to just getting the job done or knowing what i get will do what i ask without any problems.

The pump head really has little bearing on a closed loop system(canister).

What does need to be considered is the actual flow rate of the filters. Just going of memory here but these are the numbers to be considered. XP3 @ 185gph, XP4 @195gph and the FX5 is 425gph.

hmm.. I have my rena XP3's on the floor under my 29.5" tall 150g tank that sits on a 29" high stand..total distance from the impeller chamber to the output is probably about 4.5 feet. and they still blow water like crazy, even full of media.

so I would think that the figures given for max. head would be correct.

I think his Rena canister might have picked up air into the impellar. Unfortunately, this is a known problem for my Rena XP3 as well. I would release the latch to let air out. I think it's because the spray bar is above the water line and sometimes end up picking up air. I agreed with him on the statement you paid for what you get. For the price it's worth every pennies but not the best filter in the its class.

Yea the GPH rate is lowered by the Media Used so those numbers i did not include as it varies by User.

I did say it was incorrect just Questionable. I had problems with my Xp4 bc it wouldnt keep the flow. I didnt have any Air stones by the inlet and the spray bar was below the water level. I dont know what i could of done wrong but im up for more ideas as to the problem. I mean if it can help someone else in their choice to what is best for them.

Again Spray bar under the Water and no Air stones by the intake.

Yea deffinately pay for what ya get! Ive learned this more times than one.

Have you actually tested this with a flow meter? Cause the manufacturer (Rena) states different.

;) Nope, never checked it on a meter. Visiually (since they are both in the same tank) I can see the difference. My personal experience might differ from some others (hence the term subjective). The mfgrs. specs. are based on tests done selectively on empty 'cans' (no back pressure). The posted stats of "up to 350gph & 450gph" are a bit of a stetch to say the least. I guess if I needed to know exactly, I would slap a meter on but visual observation is more than sufficient for me right now. Bear in mind no two filters are gonna have the same flow no matter what the ratings say. As long as they are in 'the same ballpark' you should be fine. After watching & listening to something day after day for a number of years, you pretty much can tell when it ain't running right. Car, boat, pump or filter, you get a 'feel' for it. You might not know what's wrong but you'll know it ain't right.

Can't fairly compare the 'XP4' w/ the 'FX5' or the '2080'. Those things are MONSTERS! That's like hamburger to sirloin, yea they're both red meat but price, quality & performance differ substantially. "T"
