how did they die?

The first one just stopped putting out pressure at all. I had a friend, The Fanatic, come over and help me with it, but he also could not get any pressure going. He has been doing fish tanks for over 20 years, I hope he knows his stuff!!!:)

The second filter was making a loud buzzing sound that started yesterday in the afternoon. When I came home from work today it was still humming VERY loud. I checked the pressure, and the pressure from the spray bar was fantastic. I figured I would just double check to see if there was a clog anywhere. I shut the filter off, opened the lid, everything was fine. Plugged it back in, nothing. The motor does not sound or feel like it is even moving. It is now dead.

I was using an XP3 and a Tide Pool II to filter my 180 gallon. Water was very clear. Then I switched out and added 2 XP4's and a larger wet/dry and my water is cloudy. What gives? The former XP3 and an XP2 are filtering a 100 gallon with no problems. The XP4's are filtering, I guess, but when I open them up after a month, there's not much debris in the baskets. I have pre-filter sponges on the intake.
Personally, I would prefer another canister rather than the XP4's, perhaps Eheim. The XP3 and XP2, however, are champs!
Just my two cents.

You have to be careful with the XP4's if you get the trays misaligned, it can cause it to develop an air bubble and burn out the motor. I just had a problem with mine doing that. Make sure that the cover of the top basket with the raised circular plastic ring lines up directly with the recessed ring on the bottom of the pump. You may have to prime it several times to get it to force the air out. Just make sure that it's not making that buzzing noise, that's very bad!

I just bought a Rena Filstar xP4 about 3 weeks ago. So far I am NOT impressed. I am going to call them to see If it is something I am doing wrong. Both pipes arre full of moldy looking stupp and there is no pressure where the water comes out. When I put fish food on the water it doesn't move. Does this sound normal ? It was cloudy and didn't smell good so I stuck a emperor 400 on it and it cleared over night. This Rena cost 5 times what the Emperor did what gives ? My stnad is low and i can barley fir the filter underneath, would this do it? I can't get it any lower, what can I do ?

Make sure the hoses aren't pinched or obstructed? May not look the best but move your XP3 to the side of the stand just to figure out what's going on with the filter.

It's ironic that you said that about the trays because that's what I thought the problem was. I realigned the trays and closed the lid back on, and now the motor won't kick on.

I also am having the issue with my hoses turning all dirty. I was getting great pressure however, but the hoses look like have mold all through them.

If you're mechanically inclined and feel comfortable with it, you can take the pump housing off the top and turn it over and pull the pump assembly out. The disk on the bottom of the housing will turn and you can pull the assembly out and inspect it. Be careful not to bend the impeller shaft. You may be able to "jump start" it by cleaning out the pump assembly. Inspect it for any blockages or cracked or broken parts as well.

If I remember right SKLZ, that first day we were setting it up, you closed the top of the filter and inserted the hoses and pushed the lever down to clamp the hoses in and it didn't give and you pushed harder and something popped or cracked. Then we couldn't get any pressure. That may in fact have been operator error.

I have an X3 and an X2 and am ecstatic. I also have a Fluval 304 and I HATE that thing. Getting it sealed and primed after a cleaning is a HUGE PITA. I will be replacing it soon with an X2.

You know, you bought the X4 in anticipation to buy a bigger tank. Maybe you should scale back to the X3. I have an X3 on my 110 and it is doing just fine. If I recall you are looking for a similar tank as you only have 5 feet of space as well. Take the X4 back, get the X3 and save yourself some coin...
