OP, Go with a Odyssea CFS 500. They are < $60 SHIPPED and are great filters! 500gph (empty of course) Very quiet and Very similar in funtion and quality of the FX5.

check it out!

Although, if you could find a used FX5 on CL like me it would be AWESOME~

I got mine used off of CL for $50. The guy thought that it was broken because of the Prime Cycle that the onboard micro processor goes through.

@12 volt man,

The FX5 has onboard power saving technology though. So I'm not sure how accurate your statement is... Any proof of this claim?

Its not a waste of $.

Its insurance. :)

wats the difference
can you expound

with two filters on the tank already, fish deaths from lack of filtration/water ciculation is already a non issue.

the issue is essentially this: is it worth it to spend extra money on an oversized filter when you already have lots of filtration on the tank as is?

that is a question only the poster can answer.

With the FX5, he could down size And either keep the extras for backup or sell them and put the money towards something else in the hobby... No?

hehe wow! i didnt think id get this many answers! sorry for the lack of response, i crashed on the couch for 5 hours..long night ;) but i completely understand what you guys are getting at, which is the FX 5 is much more than necessary, but heres my planning: if i could get my FX5 to last a few years, which it should if maintained, i plan on having a 210g or maybe even a 300gal in the next few years, so thats my only reason for going biggest in this group.
so if the topic was edited to use this on a 125g for a couple years, then eventually on a 300gal, would the FX5 be a keeper? ( i know i sound stuck on the fluval, its just i found a pretty good deal on amazon for 234.90, or 258$ with media etc. and big filters on sale turn my head :naughty:

but i am listening to what you experts have to say! haha..but 300 gal future investment, adding the fx5 onto that, should i jump the gun and go big? :nilly:
thanks everyone!:headbang2

I voted FX5, but you do have plenty of filtering on your tank already. If you buy the FX5, you're adding on filtering that you don't need. If you decide to eventually get a larger tank, then maybe the FX5 will be a good investment for that larger tank that you might eventually get.

FX5. Rena is junk (i own 2 xp3s btw) and why wouldn't you want to overfilter?
I have both (Rena XP4 & Fluval FX5), and the Rena is actually not bad at all, although its flowrate does not even compare to that of the FX5.
