Repashy Superfoods: For CA/SA Cichlids too. How To and Review

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hey Allen, you must have gotten that google notification again. :)

I make the Repashy in a plastic take out food container...and then bring it outside to cool. Less stink but still some.

It comes down to liking to fiddle around with new stuff for me... Planning to mix little chunks of worm, veggies, etc. into a batch and see how it works.

My main new fry food is Golden Pearls (which I get from Kensfish.com). I've had the best results of anything (survival rates, growth, etc.) with it.

Matt

Thanks dogofwar for the review. I agree that this is best used on small fish and fry and that its not a staple food for sure. I only supplement this stuff with my larger guys once or twice a week that eat it. It does stink for sure but i guess im lucky cause my girlfiend doesnt seem to be bothered by me cooking or storing it. I much rather prefer mixing this stuff vs crushing up pellets for fry and making a mess in the water. very clean way to feed fry and what they dont eat siphons up easily as its localized to one spot.

Golden Pearls can be an excellent starter food for fry, as a replacement for freshly hatched BBS, but just like BBS it's not something that I would keep a fry on long term. Not exactly "new" though, anymore than gel food is. lol

I never tried or have I ever seen Golden Pearls, I've heard it's good. I use NLS I grind in morter and pestal or Hakari 1st bites for fry and have had good results with both. once they get a little bigger I feed some Daphnia and then on to .5mm NLS. I like to start them on NLS ASAP because that will be the staple for as long as I have them. I don't use flakes at all. Whetever gets them from point A to B works.

Most cichlid fry are rather simple to get feeding small food particles from the get go, others do better if started on live food such as BBS. For the latter feeding live increases the overall survival rate, and initial growth. Most large scale breeders do not feed gel food, or GP's to their fry tanks. If in the larvae or early fry stage they require a supplement to kick start their feeding, it will be with freshly hatched BBS, then converted to pellets/flakes once large enough. As you said, if it ain't broke .....

For whatever reason, I've never had much luck with newly hatched brine, either live or frozen (either of which are a PITA, in my opinion).

I start with Golden Pearls...and then move to flake and pellets when they get about 1/4"...

Matt

LOL, I agree, BBS can be a PITA, but if hatched correctly they work very well as a starter food.

Some cichlid fry require live food to trigger a feed response, not many species, but some fish certainly do far better for the first month or so on live food than any type of commercial product.
