Correct me if I'm wrong anyone. Cold water changes simulates cool rainfall in the wild that kind of "get's them in the mood" :naughty:

Also, My male retic (about 5") will only eat bloodworms. He is fat and healthy, no hip bones, eats like a pig. But won't even touch brine and mysis shrimp. Have also tried tilapia, cut eartworms, pellets, pretty much everything. He will only look a live and frozen bloodworms. Nicole, how did you get your's on other food? Or were they already eating a varied diet?

My thoughts exactly. :)

Perhaps also to add more dissolved oxygen to the tank?
 
Ok I had heard about the cold water simulating fresh rain fall....that was the original reason for me changing to cold water. Second is of course the cost reason. Generally the cold water only reduces the temperature in my tank about 2-3 degrees for a short period of time.

Ashley~ I don't really know what to tell you on the food all of my rays were strictly on black worms when I got them, and for some reason I couldn't even fathom to tell you but when I offered my rays anything new they took to them immediatly. My rays preferred food is nightcrawlers but they will eat just about anything I put in the tank including algea wafers and cichlid sticks LOL strange fish. Bruce I got from a freind and she had tried him on nightcrawlers several times and he refused, she cut them up and he would eat small pieces. I told her I am not cutting the damn things up he will learn to eat them whole! and first time I put a whole one in he ate it. Smart ray knew I would starve his goofy ass if he didn't eat it hahaha.

I keep my tank set at 82 and I run 3 stealth in the main tank and 2 titanium heaters in the sump.

For filtration I only use filter socks and bio balls Nothing else!

On a side note baby is doing fabulous! she didn't eat for the first 4 days which I totally anticipated and on day 4 she pounced!!! Eating black worms 4 times a day right now and will be as big as her mother in no time :) I will start to wean her onto cut up night crawler in about 3 weeks.
 
Bruce had a rougher time of it than Nicole's female. In fact he almost died of the horrid death curl. However with a bit extra maintenance and love he survived. He was treated with Prazipro and salt with regular water changes. Just goes to show that even these "harder" to care for rays can mature and reproduce. Nicole acquired Bruce from me about a year ago and I am glad he is doing so well. Now that I have a much bigger tank I hope to get a Bruce and Tundra baby from her in the future.;)
 
What size is the new tank Kirstan? And don't you now have a big Bichir and Goby? Not so sure little tiny retic's would do so well with those as tank mates?
 
The hot water has less oxygen then cold water, so in doing a water change with hot water it is kind of counter acting the purpose of a water change...
 
I have a 300 + Sump with a big floor plan in the living room in the basement. The Goby and Bichir get the 100 gal upstairs with the Parrots. I got the big tank to just have rays again. :D I miss Mr. Bruce..
 
I totally hear ya there! Nice to know you got a new big tank. I have so many people that would like a captive bred retic baby it is unreal! But I REALLY don't want to ship them. I am pretty sure she is pregnant again so I am thinking right around the first of December for the next litter. I will let her have 2 more litters than I am seperating her and Bruce for 6 months or so. Looking at turning my office into a big tank around 2000 gal. Let me know if you want one from the next litter if your tank is ready for it.
