So what were your plans on catching the small sturgeon? I've heard of sturgeon in the ohio river but I've never had the chance to catch any.

what my friends and i did was put out some set lines. we caught large carp, 2 shovelnose sturgeon, and flathead catfish. The sturgeon were about 1.5-2 feet long. My idea for catching small sturgeon is to make several large fish traps out of, just off the top of my head, a dog cage or some other box-rectangle shaped container covered in chicken wire with small holes or screen wire or someother metal with small holes. Cut a hole in the dog cage and put in a cylinder shaped wire tube to make it so that the fish can get in but not get out. Put the bait in a sealed bag with small holes to let out the scent into the water to attract the sturgeon. Tie a rope to the top of the cage and throw it out about 15-20 ft, then wait. give it over night because that is when sturgeon are searching for food and check it the following morning. You could catch catfish in it too. But you would need to experiment with different baits and locations.

Thats an awsome idea. I think i would make one wide V shaped entrance towards the bottom. You could use cheap 1/4" steel rods bent and welded into a box then cover it in small chicken wire. I think they would cost $30-$40 a peice. This would also be a good way to get baby flatheads and other bottom dwelling fish. Hmmm, you've given me something to draw out tonight. I'm going collecing in a couple of weeks, I could use these.

nice. that sounds like a great idea. ive only got a little minnow trap that you can get at scheels right now. so i wont be catching anything real big soon. the biggest thing that ive heard caught in a trap the size of mine was my friend somehow got a 6 inch bullhead.

I caught one that size with a dipnet in a small creek. It got stuck in the net and it escaped after I got it out it.

too bad. sorry. when my friends and i are going for bullhead in the creek we usually catch 8-10 inch bullhead on fishing hooks. except in april and may when last year we caught 3-5 inch bullhead for a weeks all newlyborns. we also catch bullhead that size in traps.
