Rimless Bottomless 100g tank setup

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Interesting setup.

3M Colorquartz isn't available but you can always use Spectraquartz as it is almost identical. N.T. Ruddock is the local distributor and I get mine from there. I think they are in Bedford.

i dunno what to say to be honest. What is the final purpose of the tank being upside down? It can easily be used as a sump. Looks like a disaster waiting to happen!

Anyway, i'll be following with interest.

HAHA the tank that is upside down is filled with water the fish can swim up into it above the water line of the 75g.....and from what I gather seems like everyone is waiting for me to post up about the melt down of this thing when it explodes in my living room...lol Hey thx deeda whats the price point on that sand substrate and how fine is it?

The last time I bought any was in Nov. 2009. I buy S-grade which is very fine, about 0.21mm in size, whereas pool filter sand varies from 0.45mm to 0.55mm in grain size.

Prices vary a bit, White was $19 for 50 lbs and Black, Brown & Buff were $25 ea for 50 lbs.

BTW, Colorquartz used to come in 2 grades, S which is round and T which is angular. Spectraquartz comes in F-grade which is round and Q-grade which is angular.

They are actually located in Oakwood Village and their office does have sample colors to view. I usually mix the colors I referenced above until I get the specific look I want.

Awesome thx for the info on the sand I ordered a 50lb bag cant wait to see how this looks. But here are some pics of the current setup I've got a temp light on the top just to light the tank till my coral life 36" comes in I got a killer deal on one and I'm going to suspend it from the ceiling so it light the entire tank. I'm also toying with the idea of doing Halide mini spot lights to just for effect since I want this to be a planted setup. Other than a few parts shes up and running and currently cycled once. Now I'm just seeing how things work and how the fish adapt to the tank with some feeder goldfish and monster trap door snails to see how things go. Below are some pics of the tank being cycled I'll post some final pics once the remaining parts come in.

Update:

Just got a notice my light came in so I'm hoping to put the finishing touchs on fri and post finalish pictures then. Over the weekend I picked up SpectraQuartz black sand for the bottom of the tank it looks BEAUTIFUL!!!! I went with the F-Grade alittle fine but its heavy enough that its not all over the place. I've got the tank stocked out with:

6" Blood Parrot - shes is alittle retarted and likes to be pet by ppl
12" Tire Track Eel
8" Ornate Bircher
6 by 8" Koi Angle
3" Figuare 8 Puffer
LG about 3" diameter Trap Door Snails
1" Random Feeder Comit

So far the Angle and the Blood Parrot love hanging out in the 29g everyone took abit to adjust to the idea of swimming above the water line of the main tank but they have adjusted fine. I added 2 Bio Chem Zorb bags to the sump and modified an old in tank wisper filter as a giant chemical filter which is also in the sump. I upgraded the pump to a spare RIO 2100 I found from an old pond setup and now the turn over rate on filtration is awsome! Just trying to figaure out what to plant the tank with any ideas plz share.

Also I'm trying to work out the details on how to mount black lights accross the back of the tank to the stand but have the light directed up into the tank for night light effect. So any one whos got experience with custom lighting I'd love some input.
