cool

lets see some pictures of yours

sure thing. they're little guys now.
the female is probably 1.5" at best and the male is barely 2"
they're in a tank with a bunch of clown loaches and a 7" male vieja argentea. the driftwood is gnarled and the vieja isn't as nimble as the cons are, so he's getting frustrated at trying to chase these guys :D

hopefully tomorrow i'll get some shots when the cons become more confident

they are not cons! dont demean these fish by calling them that hahahha. i love cons. but they are very different!! my pair is awesome. i need to get them a spare 5 gallon to breed them!

haha well i'm in the process of posting this same question on other boards to see what the consensus is.
chances are they are probably not a few species... probably a geographical variant of the good ol' CON :D
haha i don't care man... cons are cool. we all kept cons at some point or another... it doesn't take anything away from them. in fact, cons are what defines a cichlid in my book. full of spunk and personality :)

Looks like a Honduran Red Point. Stunning fish you got, but the blue on the neck serves otherwise that it isnt a con. Fins are to die for.

90% of the Rio Monga Cryptos in the hobby originated in my hatchery, They are not convicts and they are not hybrids, but pure breed F1 fish from wild fish I have caught on my 3 collecting trips to Honduras. There are three species of Cryptoheros in the Rio Monga, C. cutteri, C. sp. HRP and C. siquia, none are C. nigrofasiatus (convicts are ristricted to Guatamala, El Salvator and north Western Honduras, the Rio Monga is in North Eastern Honduras). The C. sp. HRP Rio Monga are different than the Danli race of HRP Rusty introduced into the hobby 10-12 years ago, but that's not surprising as every river the fish are a little different, The C. siquia is very similar to the HRP, but gets a red belly on the females, where the HRP do not. Both species have blue gills plates and bellies with red fins, HRP tend to be more blue. Ken

thanks for the clarification, ken.
this morning when i was feeding my fish, i could tell the male had really red fins and the body was a dark grey/blue color with some stripes.
i think they are still scared because of the huge argentea in the tank that's cruising around. i'll get pictures once they get their own tank space.
but it's kind of exciting to have a new fish species :)
