For various reasons I've decided to set up a riverside themed tank. As you'll see I changed the stock quite early on..long story. Anyhoo on to the pics!

It started with a male midas and stuff I just had lying around...

The filtration was fairly minimal, consisting of a 2 13" X 13" X 2" sponges with a hole cut in the center for the outflow of a powerhead. You can barely see the sponges on either end, theres a few live and artificial plants draped over the edge to help hide them. The plant in the clay pot is golden lloydiella. While it was unique & interesting I still wasn't quite happy with it, it was just too bare.

The next stage. I traded in the Midas for 6 Keyhole cichlids, bought a few tetras & 3 pink cories, and added some more plants & gravel. The plants coming out the top are Dracaena Fragrans, aka Corn plant, and Papyrus, they are suspended with various artificial vines & rubber coated wire. I also removed one 13" X 13" sponge, capped the hole in the other sponge and placed the intake hose of a large (FX5 knockoff) canister filter behind it. The outflow is directed into the tank proper, so all water is prefiltered before entering the intake.

The third stage, removed just half of the existing gravel, then placed the remainder in a plastic tub I used for snakes, it has several holes drilled in each end. Then I added some planted tank substrate. The reason for this is I hope to avoid ammonia spikes from the new gravel cycling...I know the canister filter is fully cycled, but just wanted to hedge my bets so to speak. Still waiting on a spraybar for the canister filter, and some dwarf water lettuce. I may get more plants, and or remove some. Swords can get quite large, so we'll just have to wait and see if they all stay.

plants in the substrate are lloydiella, water sprite, amazon swords & pennywort. Several sprigs of water sprite & lloydiella will be left floating as well.

Good thing he doesn't live in it anymore; )

Not trying to be a jerk, but you did read the first post didn't you? I mention quite clearly that the stock had been changed.
Yeah, premature posting. Thought that first post was it, lol.

More details.
Lighting, the tank is placed in a North facing window with sheer curtains to help control how much sunlight comes in, artificial lighting consists of a single 48" 6500k fluorescent tube. Cleanup crew, theres currently only one nerite snail, when the plants take root I'll add several malaysian trumpet snails & some more nerites if this one works out..I know they prefer harder water, so nerites may not work in this system.

The stock will change somewhat over time, in the end there will only be a m/f pair of keyholes left out of the 5 keyholes, there was six but they picked one off already...pretty sure it was a male, killed by another male. Really interested in dwarf neon rainbows as dithers, but I read they eat a little plant material now and then. Anyone have experience with dwarf neon rainbows and planted tanks?
