Sorta getting geeked now, just bought 6 pygmy chain swords, these were divided into 12 & replanted in small basket type planters with rock wool. I like the look of the large and small chain sword species together.
I'll add the rest of the substrate over the next week or so, still hoping to avoid that ammonia spike. Dwarf water lettuce should be here around the same time as the spraybar, I'll hopefully have most of the plants properly planted by then. I really want to add some manzanita in a manner that suggest's roots...or perhaps just a fallen branch. Depends on what I can find. The coolest part is that I found the most perfect spawning plate ever. It's a clear glass fish shaped candy dish, or tray, with raised detail on the bottom & smooth surface on the inside. What makes it so cool is that it looks very much like a Keyhole cichlid.

For a while there thought I was the only one following this thread, lol! Thanks for the response guys; )
Sounds promising sellfish, I really like the look of praecox.
And thank you so much for the links TahoeFish, while some of those are far more elaborate than what I had in mind, they're wonderful inspiration....sh, don't tell anyone, but I ganked those pics like a piccie stealing ho! I love how they actually scaped right up out of the water, so cool!
For the moment I'm just concentrating on getting the new substrate cycled, & growing the pygmy chain sword out enough to divide it one more time. Also waiting to see how the keyhole population stabilizes, I'd forgotten just how nasty they can be to each other! It does look as if I have a pair, possibly a trio, if it turns out to be a trio I'll remove the extra female. Debating how many praecox to add, I really want to keep the stock sparse to encourage the keyholes to breed, and have plenty of room for their fry. Thinking no more than five praecox, hate to add less than that as they feel most comfortable in large numbers. Also thinking I might keep it to all male praecox, theoretically not having a female to fight over will keep them from fighting/fin nipping.

Dear Auqadurt manufacturers, I love your product. But "you may want to pre-rinse our product" should read, "We mixed in several pounds of mud, so it's gonna take you hours to rinse our product, if not days!". The latter sentence with a "Muhahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!" following immediately afterward would have been far more accurate.

Don't get me wrong, I've only had my swords planted in it for a few days but they already show mad growth...really am very impressed with this substrate.

Not alot going on, some sediment from the gravel has settled on the Amazon swords, but new growth looks great ...pygmy chains are (I think) microswords, not pygmy chains, they don't seem to be thriving as much as the Amazon swords. Down to three keyholes, fairly certain I've got two females & one male. Water lettuce was sorta dissapointing, healthy but very small, definitely ordering some larger ones from a different seller. Waiting on a few more parts to be able to install the spraybar. I'll end this post with a pic of the coolest spawning plate ever...more tank pics asap.
