.....Unfortunately with all the changes the keyholes have turned back into scaredy cats. View attachment 877772

Or they spawned!

Brought home 3 praecox tonight, which of course brought the male keyhole out. I was worried that something had happened to the female, so I began peeking through the ends of the aquarium, looking behind rocks etc. I found her hiding behind the largest rock, fanning what looks to be a fair size clutch of eggs for such a little girl. Regretting the praecox now, I hope they don't chow down on keyhole fry!

Good to know, I only asked because of what you'd said in your first post in this thread...

Yeah, I didn't like the look of the sponge/power head, too cluttered. I'm using a canister filter with a nylon sock over the intake. The canister filter is an fx5 type filter called CFS 500, from an ebay seller called topdawg, or topdog? Anyway, googled reviews on it and they all looked sorta bad, until I found a forum thread saying to change the existing o rings. The bad reviews all had to do with the couplings where the o rings are located breaking. Replaced the o rings and haven't had one bit of trouble. It seems the o rings that come with this model are too thick, store bought o rings of the same size are thinner and work much better/smoother.

Beginning to wonder if the Keyholes didn't eat their fry, possibly because of the addition of the praecox, but more probably because of me peeking and peering at them.

No sign of fry, yet both Keyholes are out & about, feeding etc. Fairly sure the fry are gone. Oh well, I'd prefer they wait 'til they're bigger anyway.

Great story concerning the praecox. I bought them at the super center (not walmart) where I work. As we're not allowed to help ourselves off the clock I asked one of my managers to get them for me. He was surly, and obviously did NOT want to net fish for me. I was very specific about what I wanted, pointing out males and or females for him to net. As he was bagging them up he said "you know these fish probably won't breed, they're from the tropics and are very sensitive...blah, blah, blah" I just smiled and said I'd bred a great many "sensitive" tropical fish. I didn't tell him I was once in the fish breeding biz....I wanted to say "I don't think you know who you're talking to" but that would've been just a little too pompous even for me. It's especially funny to me when you consider praecox are reccomended for beginners...and even funnier when it was me who told him the difference between m/f praecox...and he somehow thought I was in need of his advice, lol!

Added two Golden Panchax, a m/f pair. And three more praecox, including an extremely beautiful blue male...if he makes it. All five fish had some type of fungus or another, coming from a grocery store rather than an lfs, it's to be expected. I'm actually optimistic about all five of them. They all seem to be recovering quickly with ich meds & higher temp, albeit the one (did I say BLUE?) male praecox is the worst looking of the lot.

the spectacular male died, crap.

Replaced the dead male praecox & got two more females(?), I may even get a few more. The keyholes seem to like the praecox more than any other fish I've put in there. Schooling with them etc. Definitely pulling the tetras asap. I've a friend with a 125 community that will buy (at a much reduced price, want to give him some kinda deal!) all my unwanted tetras.

Absolutely loving the praecox, almost as much as I love the keyholes. I'm definitely going to try separating a pair/trio and try breeding them.
