Royal Pleco and driftwood

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I felt cheated by my lfs, i got that piece from them.. they had it in the tank for long time

I had this wood in tank for 2 month, it started the little white stuff today. :(

Guys

So should i take it out? would the white stuff on the wood harm the water or fish?

Sean

The fungus will just get worse and the wood will rot if left in the tank. The portion you see is like looking at an iceberg. You're seeing only the small "fruiting bodies" of the fungus and not the total branching mass of the mycelia (vegetative part). Also, unlike plants, the fungus consumes oxygen.

May have jumped the gun here. Your post said 'white stuff'. Can you provide a pic? If it's grayish-white and looks like many areas are growing taller than others (up to 0.5") then, this is a fungus that's taking advantage of a buffet of decomposing wood.

If it's a white but, almost transparent fuzz on the wood, this is fairly common. This fine white-ish coating is not great to look at but, it's harmless. If it crops up, it's usually within several weeks to a few months after being placed in water. Some plecos will eat this coating as well as otos and some shrimp. The fuzz will eventually go away.

Not grayish, but just white little fuzz spot.. not growing every where, just some part of the wood.. little spot here and there.. its pretty even on the spot, cant tell if it is taller on one spot than the other.

i just washed the wood.. so i cant take photo now.

Do you reckon to take it out? I do not want to harm the water or the fish

Thanks

Sean

if its not the "ok to leave it" type of wood, and it is still in the water, what would happen to the tank?

For royals... Yes. It is a must.

thats a misconception, although important to royals, a lot of pleco species need the lignin and other content they derive from bogwood. i would personally take out the piece of wood you got, and get some proper bogwood. malaysian bogwood is good, and the pieces that look dark brown (and when wet almost a reddish tint) look best.

The wood will rot, fall apart, and use up oxygen during the whole decomposition.
