Should be fine once a bit bigger. I’d also be careful cichlids and planted tanks don’t mix well.

I have some ottos with a keyhole cichlid and in a planted tank and they all do well. The ottos are obviously not whiptails however they are similar. Hopefully this helps comrade.

Is that still the case with potted plants?

I was thinking of just putting a few pots of assorted things in so I can top the soil with pebbles kind of like you do with succulents.

I've done this in the past with goldfish who are just the worst with plants, particularly when spawning. I had one goldfish that used to dig root tabs out of the substrate and try and eat them before I moved to pots.

Even potted plants but can try as they are a peaceful cichlid.
