Royal Whiptails

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
A catfish tank you say? Pm me if you decide to set up another, I would love to go over it with you if you’re down with it.

Haha. I will do that, however anything over 110 will have to wait till we move again, unfortunately I don't have the space for anything bigger at the moment. ?
How about a 20 gallon oto tank? :p lol

One of my favorites would be the Farlowella sp. also called the Twig fish. There are some 30 variants. You could also add Flagtail porthole cats. They are very peaceful and only get about 4-5in. Since your plants are potted Geophagus would be cool.

Thanks for sharing!

Portholes along with Hoplos are really hard to find here. I asked about them at a few places and got told "haven't been able to get any for over a year"

To date the only whiptails I have seen for sale online or in store are
Red lizard whiptails
Longnose whiptails
Royal whiptails (and here I believe they label 2 different whiptails as the same common name depending where you shop)
Crying whiptails
Pinocchio whiptails
And another whiptail often referred to as a whiptail pleco.
There must be a few others getting around because I have seen pictures of them in private collections but never seen them for sale.

The whiptail, twig catfish and farlowella classifications are very confusing. There are other common names too.
Ive even seen 'royal farlowella'. Completely wrong. Those two words dot belong in the same sentence. When referring to these fish it is best to use their scientific names or at least their genus.

The two main genera are Farlowella and Sturisoma with the first beig the 'true' twig an the later being the 'royal twig' or 'wiptail'.
they can be broken down even further though.

Like I said - very confusing.
