RTC owners

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
RTC's are not known for laying around thier tanks for nothing....
Plus I belive that I did say this wasn't an ideal situation but would be possible.

I personally know of RTC's who spent 12 and in one case 16 years in SMALLER accomidations. Both were ...in point of fact... happy, healthy and lived FAR longer than average for RTC's in home aquaria.

My point was not to promote cramming huge fish in tiny tanks but rather to dispell the myth that certian fish can't be kept in an aquarium at all...

Using this same rational it can be argued that ANY aquarium fish is mistreated by not having an entire lake or river to swim around in.

Additionally I find it even stranger that while this kind of comment is common on MFK...it's ALSO common to read statements of admeration about the "WONDERS"
of Japanese style fishkeeping and comdemnation about any hint thier own tanks might be grossly overstocked....

i know what u were gettin at, i was jokin if u took offense to what i said. i dont fully get what u said at the end part, but really hope it didnt have to do with me.....im sure the tank that u said is better then a tank where the cat could even turn around in. I am also interested in building a tank like u said, only i want at least one side to be glass or acrylic

naaaa... You can also, by the way, add an acryllic window to the pallette tanks....in fact it's not all that difficult. Did I mention they come with thier own built in stand? (LOL granted it's a REALLY low one but still.....

Personally We're planning on getting a pair of 500 gallon long tanks as soon as we move out to the ranch (8'x4'x2) one for my big cats and one for the wifes Pbass collection.

They may even end up in the 20K container tank if everything goes right...I have two houses to sell and 7 books to get contracts on....but at least I have the plans....LOL

At work our big RTC named BIG MACK was in our 750gal its now in the Stienhart Aquarium in San Francisco Ca.My little guy 16-18in is in my 300gal

Not ideal at all and IMO Cruel... thats worse than putting someone in a jail cell and more like putting them in a coffin.

Just because you saw it doesn't make it right, I doubt that the fish were to happy about being in a smaller tank than 4X4X2! unless they were somehow stunted in their growth which could be done via poor feeding habits or poor conditions in general. 12 and 16 year old RTC's are going to be in the 4' range and housing them in less than 240 gallons????

I Respect you and your opinions but I beleive that the general population of RTC owners on here would agree that they really do need more space than that ... even the absolute min should be 1.5 X Length of the fish for the Width of the tank and 3 X Length of the fish for the length of the tank....Anything smaller would be grounds for me to say to find the fish a new home ASAP

I could easilly see a RTC living it's whole life in a 250 gallon pallette tank....

...................

Some of you are talking about housing a cat that can live for 20 years or more in an inflatable pool that has, at BEST, a life expectancy of a year and a half?

NOT A CHANCE you can keep a RTC in a 250 for life. I was shocked at the 500gallon comment earlier! Four foot RTC are very common when they are kept right. These fish grow FAST and HUGE. And the idea that a redtail just lays around is only because they are being kept wrong. My redtails have always been swimmers. But you HAVE to give them the room.

he was telling me how to build a tank where i could incorporate a glass side...he specifically said it wasnt and ideal situation but it could be done i asked a question and he answered it and i know what hes sayin..i wont be getting a RTC so theres no use to to critisise anyone in terms of advice, i jus wanted to hear what yall kept your RTCs in and how big it was and maybe see some pics
wolf if u get that tank and dont post pics im going to be pissed!
