RTC tiger shovelnose cross

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I could see maybe an accidental breeding happening in the wild. I think that's how most fish hybrids occur in the wild. I don't see them mating purposely. Even in mammals it is hard to get two different species to breed. Many are manmade so to speak. Others are made by some very wierd means. There was a breeding of an african leopard with an african lion once. When the female was in heat the drugged her heavilly, and let a male leopard into the cage with her. He willingly mated with her, but it was hard to tell if she was willing since she was drugged and probably trippin hard. LOL. So in my mind they wouldn't mate of their own free will, but if you just happened to have a mating pair of both species in the tank together and they just happened to be breeding at the same time, then I am almost %100 positive that you would get an accidental hybridization. Good Luck!!

also ask around as to how many members of this forum have housed both rtc, and tsn together well into adulthood, and see how many have a hybrid or even offspring of anykind from it.

surly this thread should be in the hybrid forum

I am keeping my three large hybrids in a 6' 350g growout indoor pond for now. They should be fine in there for years. Soon as I move somewhere with an enclosed garage I will upgrade to a 10' dia 1200 gal pond for them.

I've had 2 of them and they are both aggressive and mega eaters!! Both died trying to swallow something that was just too big.

My dog dropped his play rubber ball into the pond and the guy was on it in a snap. Struggled with it for a day but passed on peacefully after that.

My advise is to give these guys a miss.

My RTSN is pretty shy when it comes to feeding time. All the fish are shy except the Oscar. He always eats. I don't really see any other fish eating. I think they're all scared of the Oscar during feeding. But all the fish aren't emaciated or anything, so they must eat somehow. When I first got him, he gorged on some flakes the day before I got him. And now...and now, he doesn't seem to do that.

I went around some pet shops to day and I found a RTSN that's twice as big as mine and for a little less cash :swear:

Heres a pic of a RTCXTSN, a TSNxMarbled, and could someone ID the last pic, I took it at a aquarium in Italy this summer and have no idea what type of shovelnose it is, Thanks ~Trent

wow, i totally forgot about this thread lol! in case you are still wondering the last pic looks like rtc x marble catfish to me! That second pic isn't even a hybrid at all! I laughed hard when i found this thread. Back when i just got my hybrid, well the debate on how big they can get continues, mine is still alive and 28" long. I am quite sure he will make the 3ft. mark. lol. I know this is an old unvisited thread, but I still find it amusing to read it. We know much more about these hybrids now than we did less than a year ago!

Yeah I know the second pic isn't a hybrid, I was just wondering what the hell it was. It looks like a tsn sorta but with a weird hatch pattern on the back and spotted belly. I would like to see a larger juvenile RTC x Marble I bet it would look sweet, you should make that your next purchase! :)
