RTG Injured =*( Help plz

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Too bad they never learn & will probably jump again soon..
If you keep your tank water in pristine condition, your aro will heal up real fast.. I'd say 2 weeks or so..

So its been a few days since my RTG banged himself up trying to jump through my glass cover and I mean he really messed up his whole entire body cause I can see his fins bleeding esspecially his tail fin. the Tail fin almost seems like its broken on the bottom half cause when he tries to swim the bottom half bends like its broken not very resistant to the water current. Do u know what i mean?

Also the tank was SUPER dirty after 3 days like all the walls were browning up and I think its the blood or whatever the RTG is producing from its body polluting the water. My RTG seems to be healing the cut on his head isn't as big anymore but he is still Very very jumpy and scared of something... he's splashing water and swimming fast and carelessly sometimes slamming himself into the tank walls.

IS it normal for the tank to get that dirty so fast when there are injury's??? Also is there something I can buy or do anything to calm my RTG out?? Like somekinda drug for the fish that would just relax it? make it high or something? lol I dont know... like marijuana for people. People are always more relaxed after taking a hit.

Thanks all!

Some ideas to help recover a skittish aro.

Keep the lights off the tank. keep your water in good condition. (no ammonia/nitrite. Check your ph, and keep it around neutral as long as it's not huge ph swing from what it is currently kept in. check your filters and give them a clean. Check you have sufficient bio media for your bio load. Try to keep the water temp stable between 80-84. Feed it live crickets or meal worms it's favourite foods. Try not to have too many things pass in front of the tank during this time.

Browning up on the tank walls has nothing to do with blood. It's most likely you have a phosphate silicate issue. Not usually harmful to the fish, but it's a sign something is not in balance with your water chemistry.

As for stress relief, I wouldn't go the chemical route such as clove oil to risky to use in a large tank.
You could try products like geo liquid arowana, or easy life which have inorganic water stabilisers and conditoners to optimize water conditions for your aro.

I will definately go by Big Al's today and see to pick up a water test kit and ask my LFS about those other water stabilizers and pick them up as well...

BUT i think we have another issue on hand at the moment... My RTG's bottom half tail is broken but the top half is alright attached. I have no idea how my RTG would bang himself up like this.... How in the hell would be break his tail? Caused a big cut above his eye? crack a part of his gill plate? and break parts of his bottom fins as well cause I can see it bleeding as well... oh man...

Anyways Here are pictures...

yah DD my RTG looked awesome a week ago and was super happy whenever I came home. NOw he just hides in the back and almost never comes out of that corner. He;s got all these bruises on him and now the tail is half broken and falling off.... it sucks...

Does this mean I have to operate on the RTG? and if I do put my RTG out with Clove Oil what is the percentage chance that my RTG will die? and not wake up???

or

Is it best to just keep doing water changes and just leave my RTG's tail half fallen off?

please help all.

I'm not sure if I'm looking at it wrong. But the tail part looks like it's just banged up real bad. I don't think it will just "fall off", that makes no sense unless it's a fungus or such. Which is doubtful. If he did jump and hit himself, which is possible. He's probably just scared now.

Keep the lights off unless your checking if he's okay, and do maybe 2 WC's a week. Add salt like others and do what everyone else said. Your probably too worried about it and checking it several times a day and flipping lights on and off and just freaking it out even more. I've done this before, you seriously have to let it be to an extent. It'll probably take upwards up to a month to be fully healed and even longer to not be scared as much. Seriously watch it, but your probably doing too much and scaring it even more.

In the past 3 days you've took 6 pictures. IDK about you, but when I take pics of my fish I take ALOT. Let it be, it will be fine. Not trying to be an *** or anything either.
