Rummy nose dropping like flies

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hey guys,

I just got 15 rummy nose last night to begin what I was hoping to be a school of around 40 or so.

Within 12 hours I have lost 7, with a couple more looking not great.

There is 0 ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. No idea what is happening.

I am a very experienced fish keeper, keeping fish for more than 20 years and I've never seen anything like this.

Thoughts?

Although I don't think it's the root cause for why they died, but I would expect to have some trace of nitrate if your tank is cycled?

Purchased a group of 9 Rummynose approximately 2 yrs ago lost 2 but have 8 they spawn all the time so the eigth one is tank raised. I was very nervous about doing the Rummynose but after having Cardinal Tetras I decided to try them out. I went to a very reputable LFS that had about 50 or more Rummynose in a tank. The first thing I've learned to do is observe the fish and look for any signs of sickness or deaths. All looked great so told the owner to give me 9. I got home and drip acclimated them. Also the aquarium had driftwood, plants, and leaf litter. Tbh don't know if that had anything for successfully keeping them.

Rummynose are all wild caught, so they are not hardy. The last time I bought a dozen. First I acclimated them in a small tank by their own for a month and they did fine. Then I moved them to a community tank , only to see them die off one by one in 2 weeks.

Never had this issue with the rummynoses I have brought in the past for my old fishroom BUT i could not keep regular ol neons smh smh smh! I could keep cardial tetras, green neons alive but my catfish groups would manage to nap them so quit trying. But yet I had them shipped in directly in large batches at a time to QT at the same time to spread around my tanks for dithers and to tell me the tanks health. They definitely had TR options 10 years ago and assume its still the same nowadays.

They adapted to many different tank settings like champ. Different tank parameters and handled alot of pleco tankmates well as some south american catfish species. If they died it meant alarm bells for me to check my tanks and hardware. Maybe it was the QT I did when i get in any fish at anytime.

I do not put any fish under QT in any light on the tank itself. They only get light from the room or window. I make sure all fish are fed well and medicated if necessary at the first sign of illness they also have plastic plants and pvc pipes to feel secure in. I lightly cover the bottom of the tank with a very thin layer of sand as well throw in surplus floating plants. Like someone mentioned keep them as much stress free as much you can so they can recover

But i really want to see the current setup from the OP

Not true, there are captive bred rummy nose tetras now.
If you know where to buy captive bred rummy nose, I would like to get some. Nearly all rummy nose and cardinal tetra sold in US are wild caught and there is a Piaba Project to promote buying wild caught fish to preserve Amazon forest. In Asia and elsewhere, captive bred fish are likely the norm due to lengthy shipment risks.

Also sorry for the way I worded my response towards you, looking back now I see it as coming off rough which was not my intent.

Imperial tropicals has good rummynose. Mine were great until I lost them to a Safe overdose ten months later. Also lost two.because Canadian mysis is too big for them to eat. Otherwise they were great.
