I wonder at what age the barbels on koi become visible.
I'm not even sure if all Koi X goldfish have barbels.

Definately interesting to see how they develop.
Instead of culling the runts you could potentially give them away. i'm sure many children of friends and family would be happy to receive a free goldfish. I would be haha
When I was a kid I had goldfish , kids don't really care much about the conformity of their type they will love them.
Agreed great give away presents or gifts to beginner hobbyist.

And no koi x golds don't have barbels

5wks old.
I’ve moved some of the bigger ones to a different tank to give the littler guys a better shot at food.
This guy is the same one in the second picture from the 4wk pictures.

That one and this one look like they could be tamasaba, or look somewhat like that anyway. B2F69133-BF72-48A0-954F-795A6F0896D5.jpeg
These ones look like they maybe just koi

I’ll need to get some better pictures of the fantails. This seems to be the only one I took and it’s obvious too distorted to really see the little guy in the cup.

I’m trying to get back on track with their weekly pictures.
6wks old.
The two biggest fry
Goldfish on the left, koi on the right. I can finally see barbells on the koi! And her pattern is showing more. I suspect the yellow will turn orange if it stays. Maybe I’ll be lucky and it will be a Showa.

These guys are some of the more interesting ones. A couple deformed, but.... not ready to part with them. The one tinny goldies looks like it might have the moor eyes. And the single tail goldie has a nice fat body and I like it’s tail.
These koi have better color then most of their siblings so I’m watching them closer.

I really like that bright orange koi. at 5weeks showing that kind of color, it could be a real nice fish.

As someone who grew up with a father who kept koi for most of his life, you would be surprized how they seem to sometimes change even when they are 10 years or older.

Also interesting that 5-6 weeks is when Barbels are visible on Koi,

Great job and thanks for updating!

I’m hoping it will be. Maybe even a gin rin if the father is my kohaku.
It is interesting how they can change year to year, my are still young at only around 3yrs old. But I do have a few that have changed over that time. Some for the better, others for the worse.

And I think if I would have been ready with my smaller pond set up I’d be seeing better growth and the barbells would have been visible sooner. Once they hit 1” I can see them. Now that I only have this month left for the growing season if I’m lucky, I think I’ll just keep the ones I want inside over the winter. I’ll grow the ones I want and the ones I can sell late winter early spring. By then my second spawn will be ready too.

And thank you!

I’ve been upset with this spawn. I’ve lost the ones I wanted. Either their siblings eat them or the catfish gets them. So I’m down to a fraction of the ones I started with. I haven’t been that impressed, but I do like these two bigger koi. For now anyway. Lol the smallest one in there I believe is a hybrid. It has a beak-like face, huge eyes, and very rounded head from top view. Just a weird looking thing. No barbells, but obvious koi coloring.
