Wow, they look amazing Peter.

Beautifuul Peter, they really are. The breeding dress on the female must be something to see in person.

Yeah is you were bring down your ph more it would kill off your bacteria for sure. With my RO unit (unconstituted) I get 0 TDS and ph 5.0. Beffering it lower than that and keeping it stable/consistent would be a nightmare.. :yuck: no thanks..

Denitritifing bacteria has been known to still thrive down to pH 3.7-3.8 ... just saying. :grinno:

looking great peter, i may just decide to keep mine after all and hope for a pair. it looks like the male has the black and white dorsal fin pattern going down further than the female, has it been like that for a while? notice any other differences between m/f besides your female being a fatty :D

It may be doable, but increasing acidity by 100x is not trivial and I'm sure the tank mates won't appreciate it, among other potential problems. Guess I like them so much that I really don't want anything happen to them...breeding is nice but optional.

I actually haven't paid too much attention to colors. They have very different body shape - the male is more elongated and thinner, and the female is obviously plumper.

I'd bet that the current pH will be OK for breeding...wouldn't try to lower it...

Maybe some heavy live food for a couple of weeks and an extra big water change will get the over the hump.

Seen any tubes? I have a pair of megasema (aka tapajos 2) that act the same way periodically. Female drops her tube part way but no spawn yet. Of course my pH is about 7.4 ;)

I hope so too. My 300g went down this summer and my stocking has been out of sorts since. Getting a new tank built though, so hopefully they will have the tank back soon.

I have seen them dropping their tubes before. Sometimes I suspect they might have dropped eggs into the pit when I was not around...well just wishful thinking :)
