That seems pretty fast for geos. Just wondering, what was their diet, how many times a day, and water change schedule like?

Nothing out of ordinary really. Pellets (mix of several types), frozen bloodworms, freeze dried krills. Usually a couple of small portions a day. Weekly 75-80% WC.

Here is their progression thread - http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=318354 :)

I have a pair of megasema (aka tapajos 2) that act the same way periodically.

Matt, do you have any photos you could post of the Megasema?

I had a chance to get some of those a while back but never really knew for sure what they looked like as adults. I'm very curious.

"Tapajos 2" and megasema are actually two very different fish. In fact, they are located about a thousand miles apart. Jeff Rapps was selling "Tapajos 2" as Geophagus cf. "megasema" for a while but has recently changed the description and in a post someplace here on MFK explained that he had erroneously sold them as cf. megasema based on bad info he got from his source.

That being said, megasema is still very rare in the hobby so chances are you were offered "Tapajos 2".

For what it's worth... ;)

Regarding bacteria and low pH. The nitrifying bacteria don't die off but they do go dormant. That being said, at such low pH levels, ammonia is converted to ammonium which is not toxic to fish like ammonia is. The danger comes when you raise the pH back up. The ammonium is converted back to toxic ammonia quicker than what the bacteria "wake up". You end up with a high ammonia level and several days wait for the bacteria to kick back in.

They are stunning, no wonder they are your favourite!!

Beautiful daemon ! Love the extra red colour in the lower half of the tail. Is that specifically a spawning colouration ?

Thanks :) Actually the tail color doesn't change much. They flash dark bars on the side when they display to each other.
