S. leucosticta or S. jurupari?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Loves severums and TwistedPenguins both have S. leucosticta ... though the pic of TwistedPenguins has more of the copper color of S. mapiritensis. But it has the parallel iridescence under the dorsal fin which is the main difference between the two ... though base coloration of the facial pattern and fins is also involved.

jeffries fish is missing the parallel rows in that pic, though it seems like there is a hint of them starting. The flash could be washing them out. It's coloration is more S. leucosticta though ... how big is it? More pics would help. There's a hint of blue finage showing up that is also making it hard to tell, but the facial markings are bluish instead of copper. Again that could be the lighting/flash though. If you do get more pics, try without using the flash.

Darth Pike, thank you! I think it's awesome we've got a Jurapari expert here. A lot of people know Geos but these other guys are even more confusing as far as I'm concerned. I wonder if mine looks more copper colored because the tank light wasn't very bright and I didn't use camera flash. Because mine doesn't really look that dark although he's darker than the others. I hope you'll stick around here for yrs to come :-)

Thanks for the replies everyone. The pic that I posted was taken without the flash on my camera. Also, it might be worthwhile for me to note that his colors weren't "fired up" like they are sometimes... he certainly darkens up when I turn the lights out at nighttime. So, when he does that, he has much darker coloration and a lot more of the darker lines. I can try to get more pics of him with his darker coloration but it might be somewhat of a challenge.

I feel I should also add that there are times when my fish looks IDENTICAL to the picture that Loves Severums posted. When he is showing more of his colors of course.

Thanks TwistedPenguin, but deffinately not an expert. I haven't bred a Satanoperca species yet. But luckily their diagnostics aren't as confusingly close as the Geophagus genus is. Nor as many species. Makes things easier.

dont think its a leucosticta(these are pics of mines)

spangles on head and body color is different

from the angle you took the pic doesnt looks like it has the lines on its foreheadish area.

Yep....there are some color variations in leucosticta, but like Darth Pike said one of the most important traits is the presence or absence of a row of spangles under the dorsal fin.

AddictedToMbus, yours is colored pretty much identical to mine (s.leucosticta). I do think Darth Pike is right because the OP's fish is obviously a lot younger/smaller than yours and mine. When mine was younger he didn't have the richer coloring and was silvery like the OP.
And for the record, Darth Pike-you know more about these guys than anyone I've run across yet and that says a lot. It doesn't mean you're never wrong, it means you know the differences by heart and are usually right. Don't short change yourself lol

AddictedToMbus - Yours looks closer to the undescribed 'Amazon Red' species than it does to the red locallity of Satanoperca leucosticta. As peathenster said, there are many racial varients from the differant rivers down there. And the two undescribed species are difficult to tell becuase they are both closely related to S. leucosticta. Those two are a pain to tell apart as there aren't as many pics and the normal diagnostics between species don't apply.

doesnt look that much smaller.
these pics of the eartheaters are 4 inches.

Here are a couple more pics of my fish...

I forgot to mention that he is around 5"-6" in length I believe. Don't know if these pics will help or not, but here they are anyways.
