I use black diamond blasting and it doesn't cut or seem to bother my goldfish's mouths, and they are always sifting through it. I have some friends that use it in their African cichlid tanks too without problems.
I do think the darker substrates make fish colors pop better. It certainly does make my cherry shrimp look brighter.

Did it seem sharp? Was it hard to wash? Im starting to think Im going to pick up 50# tomorrow...what was the grain size like?

Thanks everyone

I was told to get 20/40 size, it feels like sand to me, not sharp, and it was really easy to clean. Here's a picture next to the normal sand I use:

I seen no dust, or cloudy water when rinsing it, it surprised me. I just ran some water in the bucket and let it overflow a bit. Some of the pieces did float, but they were washed over the side of the bucket.
i mixed it with a little regular sand in my goldfish tank,

Here it is, half and half

The more I read, the more sketched out I get.

Some people over on PT are saying that it destroyed cory barbels. Im a guy that likes PERFECT fish and not really sure I could handle seeing their mouths get torn up.

Id go BB - but the center brace on the bottom is causing a reflection, and in addition I worry about them getting bored and not being able to move stuff around.

How about this stuff? Some people have used it apparently: http://www.drillspot.com/products/1476408/Moltan_7941_Montmorillonite_Clay_Absorbant_40_lb

Guys - is there something I can look for on the outside that will tell me if its fish safe?

Some people are saying that it even cuts their hands, while others feel that it is smooth with a larger grain size than that of tahitian moon sand - that would be great.

I just dont want to buy the wrong stuff.

I know that there are multiple companies and even multiple different "grits" within a brand.

So that I guess is the information I need to have - that and if people think I shouldnt have it. I really dont like to see any damage on my fish whatsoever.

If youre set on sand not gravel, then you have a couple of options. Sand specifically meant for aquariums is garanteed safe, comes in tons of colors, and is easily found online or lfs. However it can cost around 10 bucks for 15 pounds, for 10 bucks you could get 50 pounds of pool filter or play sand. So specialy made aquarium sand cost alot more but wont run the risk of hurting your fish. Assuming you have a hob filter you just gotta clean out the impeller every other month or so, and you shouldnt have a problem. If you use pool filter or play sand, make sure it dont have silica in it. Along with being possibly harmful to fish, it can fuel algae blooms

white sand: from personal experience and from what i have read you can not really go wrong with white pool filter sand from your local pool store

for black sand i have herd that black diamond blasting sand is the best also the best place to get that is Tractor Supply
i found my black sand from Menards

Ill check my menards.

Just worried based on the differences in experience with black whatevers - and I think its due to the grain size. There are different sizes or grits or whatever to this stuff.

Going to menards tomorrow either way I think.

The petco stuff gets as rough reviews as the tahitian moon stuff. Saying its magnetic and floats and has small grain size - I dont want much, just enough to cover the bottom.
