saltwater newbie attempting a 55 gallon reef

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I just read all 26 pages of this and all I can say is wow. Tons of information, pics, and little "issues" you've encountered... I too am planning on setting up a SW tank (90 gallon though :D) , going to go with the FOWLR at 1st and then go with some corals at some point, very similar to what you did.

Nice job with everything man, looks great.

Thanks! I'm still planning to continue posting in this thread while I add more corals and fish. Good luck with your 90 gallon.

Putting together that ATO system made me want to do some more DIY stuff for the tank. I think the next thing I'm going to work on will be a front cover for the stand with access doors and a viewing window for the refugium. I'll probably draw something up in SketchUp.

Everything is doing well for the most part. With the new Seachem salt I am using I'm getting lower alkalinity levels than I would like, but I think it might be due to a incompatible test kit (API). I'm planning on buying a Seachem kit soon.

The GSP hides a lot of the time. I'm thinking about moving it somewhere else in the tank to see if maybe it just doesn't like the amount of flow it has on it.

The orange montipora seems like it might be losing its color a little, which I kinda expected it would since the previous owner had it under Metal Halides. It still seems healthy though.

I'm not seeing as much coraline algae growth since I switched to the Seachem Salt mix. I had a bunch that I think got killed off when I let a bunch of air bubbles flow over it for a few hours accidentally. Since that happened it hasn't really come back, but I think I just need to be patient.

Most of the corals seem to be flourishing. The pulsing xenias are growing like crazy and one has started climbing up the side of one of the rocks. The hammer coral has several new heads starting to grow out ot the stem. The frogspawn is fully open and looking healthy whenever the lights are on. I don't know if the zoanthids are growing but they seem healthy.

I think I'm going to record a video "tour" of the tank tonight. I'll post it here tomorrow.

Just read all 26 pages!!!! Brain overload. The tanks looks so much better after you added all the corals. Hope that you can find I way to get the damsel out, if you still are. I like the all the colors, textures, shapes of the corals you picked. Can't wait for the video tour!!! Hope things keep going well!

Glad to hear all is well (to a point) but with all reef tanks, the nights you have nothing to do are good nights, and at first not very often..LOL
Glad to hear corals are growing..
Take a knife and scrape some of the good Coraline algae off one of the rocks in the tank, this will help it spread out faster...
