Iv tried all 3 colors, black makes them stand out the best, but play sand is just waaayy more natural.

sand ruined my filter so i would say no

I have sand in all my tanks. Had gravel will never go back. I don't have any filter problems. You turn your filter off if you are going to be messing with the sand. Or don't keep the intake tube too low where sand gets kicked up in it.

With sand your tank is cleaner. Sure you see the poop more but when cleaning you can get all. With gravle no matter how well you vacuum you can never get it all out of there. with sand all gunk stays on top for easy cleaning.

Some of my fish are diggers, my concern with sand would be if they would eat it. I've always had gravel and intend to always keep it.

Yea i went to lowes and got 2 bag of play sand for 8 bucks(100lbs) much better than paying 20 at petsmart for a 20lb bag. I will try to upload some pics of my 55 i might put the rest in my 10 and 29 gallon tanks. We will see
