Sand vs. Gravel

i use a mix of both honestly. i have black sand with black gravel and a small bag of neon blue and green gravel sprinkled all over the surface and it looks sweet i think.

no i dont have live plants in there yet but i might go live later on down the road.

Sand is the way to go.. much easier to clean.. and looks better IMO.
If you can find it 3M Colour Quartz sand is excellent!!

black sand is great looking.i went and bought play sand just wash the heck out of it.also i will never go back to gravel sand is easyier to maintain and clean.i think it helps in achieving better water quality

yea now that I have the sand in it, and the sand has settled, i want some bottom feeders for it any ideas?

Has anyone collected sand from the wild and used it?


I live near the Mississippi river and yes its mostly mud but there are areas (mostly islands) that have great mud-free sand and I've considered gathering some for my aquarium.


I thought maybe the organisms in the sand might aid filtration? Not to mention it looks great and its free and abundant.
