Sand?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Pros: Looks great, fish seem to enjoy it better...especially if you have burrowing fish, debris settles at the top which makes it easier to siphon up.

Cons: Cleaning sand for the first time can be tedious, can damage filter if the intake is too close to the bottom, debris settles on top which may not look so appealing.

I switched over to sand in my 30 gal fresh water tank and it looked more natural then the bright blue and pink rock my daughter picked out. As stated above cleaning it is a pain in the butt. I use a siphon tube but you just have to have patients with it.

Just an FYI: Petco is now selling black sand. $17 for 20lbs which is pricey compared to $3 for 50lbs of play sand but if you are wanting a dark substrate it might be something to look for. From the looks of it, it doesn't need to be washed as much as regular sand either.

I heard play sand is really dirty and needs to be washed before you put it in the tank..

i use marine sand for my freshwater tank and it looks amazing and mine is not hard to clean at all!
