These are one of the most peaceful cichlids you can have. They do better in groups of at least 5-7 or more and can get big, around 9 inches in aquaria. These fish can have issues if not housed in a big enough environment. What size tank you putting them in? I don't see any issues with the fish you listed.

they would be in a 4x2x2. didn't realise they got 9" though. maybe smaller fish like blue eyes or firemouths might be more suitable for what i want to achieve

Lost the altifron fry last night:cry: Female must have spit them out as there is no evidence of her or the male holding. Checked the tank pretty well and no sign of the fry. Leucostica are still holding their fry and will most likely be moving them to their own 40 gallon with the hopes of maintaining and raising the fry.

Sorry to hear about the altifrons, but once they get started they'll probably do it again soon :)
Thanks, I think the kep next time will be to eith move all the fish out but the parents.

Update: Phase 3 "maternal mouthbrooding and tending is complete". I moved the the parents, to their own 40 gallon with some water from the main tank and a good mix of new R/O water. I dripped aclimated the pair for almost 2 hours. Woke up this morning and this is what I saw. I turned off all filters for about 30-45 minutes and introduced some baby brine shrimp into their "mock spawning site" and the parents began releasing the fry more often. The egg sacs are barely visible so it's time to try to feed. Both parents are holding the fry and I estimate each is holding 30-40 fry or more. Please see video and enjoy!

Update with Video: The parents are releasing the fry more often and for longer periods. This gives me ample opportunity to get the baby brine shrimp into the tank. The fry appear to be feeding on this pretty well. I will introduce First Bites tonight to see how it goes. So far so good. I underestimated the number of fry as there has to be at least 100-125. Check out the video and at the end, notice the female is really struggling to get most of the fry into her mouth. Enjoy!

Thanks for the kind words. This was the Altifrons second spawn and I thought they would be able to handle themselves. I've got my hands full with the Leucostica right now. Thanks again.
