Save my female henlei!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My understanding about BB die off is that it starts to occur once water flow ceases flowing over the filter media. I am sure a large amount of die off occured but I doubt all. If a ray can survive 2 days in a couple of gallons of water during shipping I am sure it would be fine for 24 hours in a large tank. Again I never seen blisters from ammonia burn, just peeling and redness, depending on severity. None killed in that short of period.
Again sorry for your loss but glad the female is doing better.

The beneficial bacteria needs oxygen, when the flow stops, there is only limited oxygen as there is not comming any new. How much, and for how long they could last on the portion given in the filter depends on how much bacteria you got i gues, as they expand as we add bioload. This is why canisters and submerged bio is better if there is a power outage. In a wet\dry filter they will dry out as there is not comming water.

Im sure some bb was hurt, but not much they were in the main tank, and whoever says sponge filters are useless has never used them. I did 2 big wc like 250g each, I'm not a dummy, I really think it's either bacterial or fungal from stress. She seems fine now and eating like a champ

I had a 48 hour power outtage back when I first started keeping rays. If all the BB dies within 24 hours of power going out surely I would have lost everything. All I did was waterchanges with warm water every 4-6 hours to keep temp up. NO water or airpumps that ran off batteries. I ran nothing but canisters and HOBs at the time.

Possible they could have stirred up some crap in the sand that irritated them then passed?

When I lived in Cincinnati, the street I lived on would lose power after a strong gust of wind. Hurricane Katrina left me without power for 10 days and this is exactly what I did. I had a gas range that I used to heat water and add to the tank to keep it warm. I only lost 1 fish, a senegal, and it was because he jumped out of the tank... Once the power came back on everything ran as usual. All canisters started up and every ray, p bass, poly I had was just fine.

I think there might have been something in the sand as well, now that she's ok that's all that really matters, just make sure you stir the sand when you do water changes, glad she pulled through for you.

she looks great glad to hear she is doing better!!!!!

Glad to see she's better.
