Save the Ethiopian people by exploiting them.

Wurm, interesting thread that went sideways. I'm always interested in listening to other ideas. One thing to note your economics professor really knows nothing about real world economics . he's probably been institutionalized his whole life living within some type of school system, never really started his own business or was an executive at any corporation. They have a tendency not to think outside the box.

Needless to say exploiting third world countries through out history has always been profitable, however why Ethiopia? Whatever country you chose you must think about the infrastructure of that country? stable Government? roads? airports? Ports? Rail ? Phone service? Electrical capacity? Hospitals? What increase in costs are you going to incur by helping to support, build, bribe in order to establish a stable environment for your factory to succeed. Another thought how stable are the bordering countries? Is the countries current army large enough to keep border skirmishes, war from impacting your profits? ( Sudan and Somalia are examples)

Ethiopia is land locked, how are your goods getting out of the country? Transportation , tariffs, taxes all add costs tremendously to your bottom line. ? Just my random 2 cents hope they help you with your school project?

plus the second you start putting americans out of work with more competitive prices your country will tax the hell out of your product so it costs more over all

Very true. But this all depends on the products at hand. If wurm was to produce fish tanks for an example, there is already an abundance of manufactures so the footprint of wurms sales wont effect the other competitors. If it was producing a line of 72" Plasma TV's for example, the competition would be very hot.

That's true of almost all countries, not just the USA...most countries have protective tariff's, duties and taxes (VAT) in place on imports depending upon products....

why, because sex became an issue... HIV and AIDS is NOT cureable, so why not atleast try to prevent it?

really, people need to be more mature and see past the thought of a rubber as something bad. sex is a part of life, and it causes more economical problems than you think. If not to prevent HIV or AIDs, atleast to keep the population down. i mean, look at China's population. instead of giving out a bag of 30 rubbers to a kid that visits the free clinic, Durex should be shipping it product over there.

WOW! Didn't take much to jump all over me, eh? You took my statement and totally skewed what I was trying to say. I was simply saying that, because it might be offensive to SOME people. This is not an issue of condoms or safe-sex, it is an issue of an epidemic that is affecting an entire continent. The issue of sex-workers on a war-torn continent can really be a sensitive one. Ewurm's idea was very interesting, but we have to be careful of how far we take it. Sometimes there is a fine line between what you may seem as fighting for a cause, and offensive to others. I am not some conservative freak who doesn't understand the importance of sex education....so :chillpill:.

I'm not worried about Ethiopia. I can make a profit by employing them for less than it would cost elsewhere, and the unintended benefit is the gain of employment in third world countries. Why should I support my American neighbor who overcharges me for his services and causes the higher price/reduced quality of the goods I buy? The best thing for the world economy and for individual economies is a free economy as long as we can produce independently our food, utilities, and defense.

For example: If Honda can produce a similar car for a lower price and the same quality, why would I buy from GM? Because my neighbor works at GM? Why not buy the Honda and give my neighbor the difference directly? Why is his labor worth more than the person that built the Honda? Because he is American? No. His labor is not worth more or less for the same output, but he gets paid more than his non-union employee counterpart that works for Honda. I don't advocate "Bringing jobs back to America" if my American neighbor holds me hostage for his paycheck.

I agree.

You know what this reminds me of? Willy Wonkas Chocolate Factory! lol.. when he goes the jungles and saves the oompa loompas and then they agree to work for him for food and shelter lol... feed your workers cacao beans

do you realize how many jobs America loses each year because of over seas production? the big man is looking for his Dollar and moves to china so he only has to pay each worker $.15 per hour. leaving us with jobs at places like Mcdonalds, burger king, Wal Mart etc. making minimum wage. nobaody can afford housing and when that happens (like it is here) construction stops. costruction stops, that means the lumbar yards close, mason factories close, trucks stop shipping, eventually everyone is competing for a job at wallyworld and our economy is ****.

Bring back American jobs and then worry about Etheopia.

This really solidifies the importance of education. If we as a nation focused more on education and health-care than war we wouldn't have to worry so much about the lack of underpaying jobs. People need to realize that there are not going to be handouts. If a person wants money, then that person should go out and make money. If said person is not skilled, and is relying on jobs that are for non-skilled people, then they should become skilled. I live in an area of MA where there is, and always has been, a lot of immigrants. Some people in this area complain that of the _______ are taking jobs away from Americans. Well, if the _______ are going to work harder, and complain less about working hard, then the _______ will have the jobs. People need to get off of their butts and learn a trade, earn a certificate, go back to college etc. if they want higher paying jobs. Overpaid, under-working employees is what will kill this economy. The government needs to stop handing $$$ money out to people who do not want to work. Bottom line = Cheap overseas labor good for big business. Why pay an uneducated American $12 an hour when you can pay someone else $2 an hour for better labor. And with Ewurm's original thesis, provide them with shelter and food, things that they barely have now.
