breeding pairs NEEED a minium of a 55 but perfer a 75 but a male alone will do fine in a 55 for life.

a 40g is a better footprint, and no. a breeding pair will do fine in a 40g breeder. these are jack dempseys, not red devils

What I don't understand is why so many people seem to assume that just because SOME fish can fit in a 10 g, that ALL fish can. And they seem to be ignorant to the concept of fish GROWING.

If you can consider a tiger in a cage animal cruelty - this is the same thing.

Now, as a Biology teacher of all things... do some research and set a good example.

Tell her that a full-grown Jack can grow to almost half the size of the tank. That's insane. Show her the thread!!

as much as I hate sayign this.. go to your local petco/petsmart.. get a care sheet on jack dempsy's.. or online print one off. and "magically make it appear" on said teachers desk.. if that hint doesn't work.. a more direct approach is desirable.. makeing it Anon in this case may be the best approach. direct confrontation of student/teacher may work, or may end up w/ a teacher who's disgruntled. If the teacher doesn't change things, head to the principle.

What she's doing is animal abuse, and it's teaching kids animal abuse. It's not acceptable. she needs to change her husbandry, or get rid of the tank.
It's a shame though fish are not viewed as equal to furry pets that we keep otherwise there would be laws applicable to this. In some countries though, they still impose penalties if fish abused are found under endangered list. Isn't it ironic they still don't apply this to domestic fish?:screwy: Only Switzerland and Romania I think have laws that penalize fish abuse.

Tell the teacher that this is basically equiveland to keeping a puppy that will grow to be 25-30 pounds in a 30 gallon tank along with its own waste, along with airborne waste. (Fish can't just step over their crap, it's all around them)

I wouldn't go around trying to get her in trouble.

I would calmly explain to her the problems of this, show her pictures of healthy JDs, explain to her how stunted growth does not stop organs from growing and then print out a bunch of papers (sourced) that talk about how this is dangerous for the fish.

You should also suggest her getting smaller fish. I would think a biology teacher would love having guppies or something like that. Tell her that she can return the fish to the store for 25% credit and I would offer to bring her some guppies or something.

Guppies are also a great example of genetics and breeding.
