So I go to Petco,to see what kind of fishes they had today,I walk farthest to the left of the freshwater aquarium area, where they have the sign saying aggressive.I stopped and I look to see this gorgeous orange Cichlid in the tank.I couldn't figure out at first what it was...So then I put my finger by the glass,to see what this fish would do.All of a sudden,he started to attack the glass,I thought oh great its a red devil that is close to 6 inchs. The lady who cleans out the tank said he just came in yesterday, because the two people who dropped this red devil off, couldn't keep him in a fish tank full of gold fishes. They were telling her that, the red devil was beating the crap out of the other fishes and eating them.I told the lady, apparently they didn't study what type of fish this was.I seriously wanted to bring him home, but there would be MAJOR issues with the red devil and my Oscar. So I have a 30 gallon tank upstairs, that isn't being used at the moment. If he still there next week,I am going to pick him up,have him in the 30 gallon tank for now, until I get the 100 gallon tank for the oscar and Jack Dempsey. Then the Red devil would be moved to the 55 gallon by himself or with another red devil his size.I wish I had a camera phone,to show you guys a picture,I have never seen a bright orange red devil before.

I'm sorry to say this to you but a 55 isn't big enough for one RD two would surly be a recipe for disaster. Best to pass on this.

Agreed... that little guy has already killed other fish, and from his behavior at the store he sounds really pissy. Only one RD can fit in a 55g and he'll likely outgrow that too. Please don't put him in a 30g for very long, it's way too small!

How could a 55 gallon be small for just one RD?My tank is long enough to keep at least one RD

Because males grow to about 12" within a year, which is how deep a 55g is from front to back. As they get even bigger, they don't have much room to turn around. Besides that, they're very active fish. You'll find a lot of debate about RDs in 55g, but a lot of people here, including me, think they're just too small for an adult RD.

I agree 100% a 55 is no place for a full grown RD. If you insist on doing it he will not live a happy life. Try living in a closet your whole life.

thats a little extreme to say seeing as that im guessing you would say that a 75 is best for one, which is only wider than a 55... but yes i do agree that a 55 gallon is too small width wise for a full grown red devil (or at least one thats +12in)

I did find a bad ass 75 gallon tank set up for 200 dollars at Petco, but I don't honestly find it to be worth upgrading to something that isn't as much bigger then the 55 gallon I have.

I would say 75 gallon at the very least, I had one in a 55 gallon (when I was a fish noob) and I thought he'd be fine, outgrew it and killed everything in there and I had to give him up

Sell your 55 on craigslist and try to find a 75 on there also..I made an upgrade for free once just by selling and then talking someone down to what I sold mine for :headbang2
