Thats probably what he means, but some players do use basses with 9+ strings. Jean Baudin (might have spelled that wrong) uses an 11 string Jerzy Drozd with fanned fretts.

Its a shame the only good video I have of him he is playing within the range of a 7 or 8 string bass.

What I do is go to Guitar Center and look in the used section. I scored an Ibanez RG 7620 for only $250!!!!! Alway look at the used section!
