School Of Armatus

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I still have not gotten a clear answer on this........

Does diet play a part in aggresion factors with Armatus? Are the ones that are off live more docile than the ones still eating live? I'm guessing it doesn't matter cause all food going into a tank belongs to the Armatus...or at least that's what they think......lol

Joey I consider you an expert on these since most of the people keeping them now are still under a foot. Yours is probobly pushing 2 by now. You have way more experience with applicable tank mates and even take the "room" excuse away in many cases. I have always taken your advice to heart and will continue to since I've never been misinformed either here or the other site. Allthough there does seem to be a little more experience regarding these fish over there. By the way do you know if Don still has all 3 of his together?

To the people that try to push the envelope and keep these things with questionable tankmates...more power to you. I'm sure we will be seeing some interesting combinations, and along with that some interesting casulties.... I know I sleep better just knowing the the envelope isn't going to push back......or steel an eyeball WHILE I'm sleeping.

Has anyone tried mixing an Armatus with a Clown Knife? How about these Sheath Fish?

Thanks for the posts Joey... I regret that I didn't ask you more about these bad boys... So far, your information is much more accurate that what I have read here and through Google. My two Scrombs have been together for a few days with out any scratch, which gave me a wrong concept on Armatus :irked: And you're not the only one I known who has a Goliath got beat up by an Armatus, so like I just said, your information is very much accurate.

or maybe his tank is one male armatus and several females?

Just like if you put 4 big male human in a cramp room, they will all beat the crap out of each other, in contrast, if you put a male with a few pretty female, they will all go along well!

Same as Armatus? One male and several females and it will work out? ^^

gonna try this schooling armatus when im a lil richer ^^

I think peope are giving fish too much credit; they are very simple creatures afterall.

1. Fish dont "grow" up together. They have just settled what territorial disputes they may have had when they were smaller and when you through in a new fish in the mix it kind of breaks that balance.

2. Unless in breeding situations fish usually will not act different towards one sex or the other.

3. Live vs. dead makes no difference. Hell a fish doesnt even know what "live" or "dead" means.

All in all it seems H. armatus is the Dovii of the characin world; big and just dang mean.

It seem aggression comes with age. Makes sense as with age comes size, with size comes less chance to be prey, less chance to be prey allows fish to be bold.

Bottom dwellers seem to work. Silver shiny fish seem to be the ones that for sure wont work. Large deep bodied fish such as dats may be possible. Im trying it and so far so good.

Would be nice to have the ULTIMATE characin combo of GATF, aimara, and armatus in one tank though!

G.. thanks.

Expert may be extending it but appreciate the kind words.

Yes, absolutely DonH is an awesome source for information as well. In addition to AmazonDon. These two guys has had the most Armatus in one single tank that I know of. I don't want to speak for them but I'm sure they can interject and give there opinions if time permits.

I think we are all on the same page as wanting to have a school Armatus, who doesn't :headbang2

I doubt diet had anything to do with as my Armatus was eating freeze dried krill and he was still a mean SOB..lol

At what size do Armatus reach their sexual interest? I doubt anyone knows, or even know how to sex an Armatus. I'm sure most will agree that this fish at 12-15" is no where close to it's sexual maturity. I doubt sex plays a factor at this small size to determine aggression.

It's just a territorial mean SOB by trait.

Sorry, it did not work out bro.

very good info dudes.
of course,i would also like to try keeping a school of armatus.
but,i dont think they are really solitary payara, some aquariums have many of them schooling in a tank.
and ive heard that in the wild they school when young.
and yea,i dont think theyre even close to sexual maturity at this size.

Please give me your sources for this information. Better yet pics of these aquariums you speak of!!

I have been learning alot about armatus from fishing websites and forums. It seems that they dont really school, but like many preds are most concentrated where their food happens to be.
