Hello all. Paige Paige and I have been racking our brain for a suitable schooling fish for our 33 gallon high tech planted tank. The conditions of the tank are what's hanging us up. The tank is:
24x18x18 inches
PH 6.2 (with co2 injection)
Kh5
Gh18
Temp 78
Current stock consists of:
2 German blue rams
2 albino long fin bushy nose plecos
1 L144 pleco
A number of ottocinclus.

Personally, I want lemon tetras, but I feel that my water is too hard, and they would suffer for it. Da wife wants leopoldi angels, but same problem. I would also love a school of exodons :D but the plecos are a breeding project that da wife doesn't want to move. I would love to hear your suggestions on stocking this tank. Thanks in advance.

I have rosy barbs and they are great. They seem to be very adaptable

For schooling fish, look at tetras, danios and rasboras. The fact that you already have soft water fish in there means it isn't that bad.
The tank is too small for a school of angels.

Amazonian Tetras would be the best choice, Corydoras if you don't mind a bottom-fish but still very active, also Redtail or Rainbow Sharks would enlighten you both i'm sure - I have a soft spot for them and I like keeping them in groups, especially Rainbow Sharks.. Redtails might get too big and nippy for this particular set-up

^ i thought rainbows got bigger than red tails??? Not that i have experiemce with them...

Reds get a little larger and more belligerent apparently

If you're looking into Angels, German Blues are the best lookers imo.

Pterophyllum Leopoldi max out at 3 inches. You do have a good point about the soft water fish.

Rainbows are a good idea, and as much as I love the look of the red tails I think the tank is a bit too small for them. Also, the long fin plecos would end up being no fin plecos.

More rams isn't a bad idea either.

Honestly, neon tetras have always been a favorite of mine for heavily planted tanks, especially those less than 50 gallons. Not sure how they would get along with the other fish though.

I think they will do fine with that stock
