Schooling fish suggestions

I used Lemon tetras with S American cichlids, in fairly hard water, pH 7.5-7.8, general hardness 250ppm, and conductivity over 1000mS, and they did well, even occasionally spawned. They were locally bred, over many, many generations.

Neons are an obvious choice for sure, but I want to go with something a bit different. duanes , thank you yet again.

For a 33g I would go with either lemons,harlequin, glow light tetras or the smaller danio species like purple passion, galaxy. I would stay away from the exodons due to they are best kept in a species tank only. They will probably harass your rams

Yes. The exodons are merely a pipe dream.

They will probably kill rams and I think they ideally need a 4ft tank

Pterophyllum Leopoldi max out at 3 inches. You do have a good point about the soft water fish.
Rainbows are a good idea, and as much as I love the look of the red tails I think the tank is a bit too small for them. Also, the long fin plecos would end up being no fin plecos.

More rams isn't a bad idea either.

The last black shark I had was a complete ass. Pestered my BGK incessantly.

You could go that route, although I was referring to German Blue Angels. White with black stripes and a hint of blue.
