Seachem Prime question

ps I am not a Prime user either.

I have been using a traditional dechlorinator that contains sodium thiosulphate (Hagen Aqua Plus) for the last 15 years or so and have never made the switch.

I don't need the nitrite/ammonia neutralizing capabilities of Prime because all my tanks have been established for years. It has been years since I last had a nitrite or ammonia spike.

Prime is cheap because it is very concentrated, but the Aquaplus is pretty concentrated too.

the turn off for me is that Prime is about twice the cost of the stuff I am using now for the same amount...

I buy a 2 litre bottle of the dechlor, and it costs 29.99 canadian.

the same size bottle of Prime is 69.99 canadian.

Now, it probably treats more, but I cant justify switching when what I am using has been working so well for so long.

count me in the minority who does not use Prime.

and besides, Prime smells bad so I hear.:)

Smells very bad, kinda like rotten eggs.

I use prime for some tanks, and sodium thiosulfate for others. The thiosulfate is great stuff, and can dechlor a LOT of water.

yeah, I have heard the smell of Prime described like a "wet fart in a shower" LOL

no thanks, I stick to the stuff i am using! LOL

If that's the case, someone needs to change their diet.
Really though, it does have a sulphur smell, but not to the point of being offensive IMO.

Prime may cost twice as much, but the dosages are much smaller, so it lasts many times longer.. Not sure what your dosage is, but I know on some of the other dechlors, 1 capful treats 5-10G (depending on the brand), where Prime is 1 capful treats 50G.

Also, I've been using prime for more than 4 years, and I still can't figure out why very few people say it stinks, lol. The only time I smell it is if l put my nose up to the bottle. And guess what? The other dechlors stink too, lol. Put your nose up to their bottles.

As for the dechlors, it's all personal preference. No matter the brand, it has one function and one function only, and that is to treat the water and make it safe for the fish. Most all dechlors are good, I just use Prime myself because a little goes a long ways.

there is a similar thread to this one going on right now over on AC, and someone pointed out that a 2 litre bottle of prime treats, in a perfect world, 50,000 gallons of water.

now I have 8 tanks totaling 340 gallons of water, of which I change about 125 gallons a week.

based on those numbers, one 2 L bottle of Prime would theoretically last me about 7.5 years LOL :)

I mentioned in that thread about how strange it is from a business perspective to have a product that is so concentrated such that your potential costomers buy a bottle and don't have to buy another bottle for, in some cases, YEARS to come..

it doesn't make sense from a business perspective, and it also puts retailers who sell Prime in an akward spot too:

you want to have customers buy from your store on a frequent basis.

if you sell them a 2 L bottle of Prime for only $30 US, you won't see them in your store for water conditioner for the next 10 years...LOL

it is completely backwards all around..

Seachems products are excellent, but they are almost too concentrated in some cases..

even the fertilizers are the same. One little bottle treats like 4000 gallons..well, you sell someone a bottle of that stuff and they won't have to buy fertilizer, seachem or otherwise for a long long time..

thats not what seachem would want and thats not what a retailer would want..

so...its really really weird...

But then, in the business world, if you can show a customer a great product that will save them money, more than likely, they will come back to you for all their other needs, right? Even if I did't need Prime for 7 years, I still need fish food, gravel for new tanks, new tanks, fish, etc, etc, etc. It may be weird, but you can also use it to your advantage. (That is in the business world)

Oh, and I buy my Prime in the 500ml bottles, and they last a long, long time, lol.

yes, as long as you don't push all seachem products.

otherwise they won't come back to you for a few years! LOL :)
