Seachem Prime question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I dont understand the constant debate with regards to Seachem Prime. Its cheap as chips, a large bottle costs about £13 over here and deos my 100 imp gallon tank a year, this is with 2 30% w/c's a week. My Bottle says "Use 1 capful for each 200l of new water" so I dont understand why people feel the need to doze the whole tank. The only time you really should use more than stated is if you had an ammonia or nitrite spike. Higher nitAte levels should be treated by feeding less and increasing water change ammounts and frequencies of water changes. When adding Prime I add half the doze I need at the start of adding the new water and the other half after half the new water is in.

I agree, if we just let it "gas off, we don't need anything more than a container big enough for change water, an air pump and stone, and a day or 2, or 3 to let it dissipate on it's own.

Your kidding? If you use a Single airstone the Chlorine disipates in hours not days, this is the reason water companies are moving to chloramine as chlorine is sooo unstable. TBH if my Water Authority still used Chlorine I wouldnt bother with chemicals to disolve it at all.

Yes, I was kidding.
I know chlorine dissipates rather fast, but also know that city water treatment plants are moving to chloramine.
You never know what they use, or how much of it, so I play on the safe side, and use enough for the entire tank on every w/c

I let my wallet make these decisions. Given the same product basically, my wallet like the idea of paying less than $ 10 for treating 25,000 gallons of tap whether I use it for my tanks or ponds. I don't need to explain to the wallet the details how much PPM chlorine or chloramine is being eliminated, I just go by the advertised numbers on the labels.

The wallet likes the idea of not paying for the water that's used for packaging Prime or Pond Prime when buying Safe.:)

As a side benefit, I spare the family of the stench involved when detoxifying tap water.:D

I never do anything to my water i just take 120 gallons (50%) out and then refill once a week, is this a problem, it would cost me an arm and a leg to treat this much water.

If you use well water than your probably fine. For what it's worth... I have also read many debates on other forums about the utility of using dechlorinators or other additives. Some folks never do anything to their water (and have been doing so for years) with no apparent ill effects. I use prime just to play it safe.

The reason for dosing the full tank is, if you fill directly into the tank, and don't dechlor before adding the water, you can do damage to the BB colony.

egg zachary.

the water plants are using chloramines (chlorine +ammonia) because it lasts in the distribution system as a disinfectant for much longer than free chlorine which reacts quite readily with many organic molecules, and is then unavailable for disinfection.

its not good for our fish (we have to make sure we neutralize them) but it does make our tapwater safe :)
