Seachem Prime question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Compared to just about every single dechlor out there prime is dirt cheap. 1 bottle that can do 5000 gallons only runs $12.99 here. When you consider the costs of the aquarium hobby, I'd say that Prime is just a drop in the Georgia Aquarium.

Pond Prime 2L treats 40,000 gals for $45

Depending on the fish you have, I personally would not dose only the volume of water being put in, unless you are pre-treating the water prior to it going into the tank. When adding water directly to the tank, I always dose for the full volume of the tank, and turn off the filters. If you don't you will risk, chlorine/chloramine shock, as well as a possible mini cycle. Prime is already very cheap. If you don't have enough for that, either you have a 500+ gallon tank, or you are in the wrong hobby.

In the wrong hobby for trying to save $$$$..........1/2 of what we would normally spend!!!....... and trying to look out for fellow MFK'ers........nice!!!

I don't go through enough prime to warrant buying something that big! But then again, half my tanks get RO water... :D

Yes, that is fine. To save even more money, buy Pond Prime instead. The cost is the same but twice as concentrated.

It's not really twice as concentrated. I use to think that, too, until somebody actually checked with the techies at SeaChem. As it turns out Pond Prime is the same concentration as Prime. It turns out that for ponds you use 1/2 as much less because of the amount of surface area in contact with the air which helps dissipates the chlorine faster.

If you really like Prime then you will really like Safe. Safe is the dry version of Prime. A small bottle which hold 250 grams of white powder will condition 25,000 gallons and cost under $ 10. If you are conditioning enormous amounts of tap water you can buy a kilo(1,000 grams) of this stuff for under $30 and will be good for 100,000 gallons.

As a bonus of using either Prime or Safe it will also neutralize Chloramine, ammonia, and nitrites. Such combination comes really handy during extended power outages when no filtration is going on unless you have backup power.

That will last me months! But I like saving money by buying in bulk. I also bought 2 lbs of Omega One pellets. That will last me months as well!

I never do anything to my water i just take 120 gallons (50%) out and then refill once a week, is this a problem, it would cost me an arm and a leg to treat this much water.

Prime is cheap. I always dose to the full tank myself. I do 50% PWC's weekly.
