Seachem Prime Vs. Kordon Water Conditioners

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
After last weekends 60g wc, my back convinced me to finally get a python, it'll be here Thursday :D Also picked up a brass faucet adapter for it, in case the plastic one strips quickly.

I'm still not sure if I'm just going to fill the buckets in front of the tank, and empty them the old fashioned way (this way I can add Prime before water goes in the tank), OR, just add Prime to the tank beforehand and add water directly.

If I end up adding water directly (which is most likely), how much Prime do I add before adding water?

For example...125 gallon tank, i already have 50 gallons drained out for the water change. Before adding water directly back to the tank w/ the python, do I dose 125g worth of Prime? 50g? Or the 75g thats still in the tank?

edit: Not meaning to de-rail thread...but it seems original question has been addressed/answered ;)

No worries on derailing the thread...this is a good question. Someone told me once to dose for the whole tank. That's what I've been doing and everything seems ok. I'm curious what other people do as well.

The thread above has a ton of expert advice on the pre treating or treating the whole tank methods :)

Ahhh very informative. I think I'll follow Dr. Joes advice and pre-mix Prime w/ water in buckets before adding to the tank. Now I just need some more buckets :D

I usually do around a 25-30% wc per week. After I empty the water I add the prime, usually 2-3 10ml capfuls which treats 200- 300 gallons( I have a 180 and chloramine water). After it circulates awhile I fill the tank with tap and try to keep the water hose away from the intakes of my canisters. I dont think it is necessary to to use buckets, IMo that would be a pain. I probably could use less prime, but feel its safer just in case the water supply company adds extra or something.

I have used NOV and AMQ in the past before I heard of Prime. I dont know when it came out but I was out of tanks for a while after Katrina. With my new tank I decided to use Prime and as far as the treating the water for the normal stuff...it did an amazing job on nitrites in my tank. I recently lost power for a while and my nitrites were were elevated to about 1ppm. I did a 50% wc and dosed a lot with prime. Nitrites after were 0....a wc alone would not have done that. So I say its good to have on hand for the problems that come up.

Also good point about the plant tanks...I wouldn't use it in a planted tank...you already have to add nitrates...

And whoever made the python is a fishtank god. I got my first one in 93 and havent used anything else!

I lower my tank to 50 % I take the bottom off my fluval outlet letting the water fall straight down also my eheim spraybar runs and I have run 2 large airstones plus I double dose in case of a city water problem etc etc. Even then I notice a minute amount of stress in the fish.

I Have found that the kordons plus is a very good buy. I get a gallon jug of it from petco for 40$. It treats way more gallons then any thing out there. The kordons plus echinicea, vitamins and anti-virus protection is what ive use for ever and i luv it.
