Seachem purigen

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would agree that it should not take the place of a regular water change it's just a nice tool to help keep water clear. I just keep extra bags recharged and alternate them when I do a canister cleaning. By the way I called Seachem and they recommend keeping the recharged purigen wet in a small container between usage. Just about to try the Matrix also I'm curious to see if it is as good as Biomax etc.

I have 2 eheim canisters (2213 and 2217) on a 55 gal brackish tank. Driftwood leaches tannins in the water. I put purigen bags in the top of both canisters and it's working great. The tannins aren't gone but the water is noticeably more clear. Just what I wanted. I'm sure it's doing a lot more good than I can see as well.

After two days it's already starting to turn brown and there's been a very slight improvement in water clarity.

I'm going to give it more time, but I'm thinking Chaidan is right...nothing will replace the benefits of regular water changes.

Drip system and cleaning filter pads was the key for me and I have a high bioload. Drip system makes the hobby much more enjoyable as opposed to being a chore, you should consider it :)

I would love to set up a drip, but my water is treated with chloramine and I don't really trust dosing pumps...seems like a recipe for disaster. Plus, I'm weird in that I actually find cleaning the tank to be therapeutic... I don't mind doing it.

I think I may have spoken too soon. I got home from work yesterday and the water clarity is amazing! I wanted to test it out to see if it was just me, so when my girlfriend came over I didn't say anything about having added Purigen...the first thing she said when she say the tank was, "damn, the water is hella clear."

My water wasn't bad before, but it's super crispy now. Not sure how it works, but it does.

Have also been thinking about using it. How do you "recharge" it guys??

Soak in a 1:1 bleach:water solution for 24 hours in a non-metalic container in a well ventilated area and away from children. Rinse well, then soak for 8 hours with a solution containing 2 tablespoons of ChlorGuard™, Prime®, or equivalent dechlorinator per cup of water. Rinse well.

Why is it everytime I buy one thing for added filtration someone makes a post that makes me want something else also. But really if it only polishes the water mostly my pond matrix will be good for a while. I mostly want more Bio long term which it will do.

purigen is good stuff and helps so its not like you wasted your money , but its not a cure all for crisp water, those that think it will instantly do this will be dissapointed.
