hey everyone.. im building a 50-100 gallon tank soon, havent decided on the actual size just yet.. depends on the fish i put in it..

i would like something a bit on the old/archaic side, maybe a gar, lungfish, bowfin if i learn more about them first... MAYBE snakehead, but theyre pretty invasive in much of the country..

but.. id like to find something carnivorous... maybe able to eat bigger fish by tearing off chunks... you know, a tank-size monster

ive decided im going freshwater for this, since its a bit easier to keep the water cleaned and filtered

so... what would y'all suggest for such a fish?.. and for that fish since im making the aquarium from scratch, what would be the best dimensions for that fish?... some might do better with a really long, narrow tank, etc...

well, thanks in advance for the help

anyway.. i should note i checked local regulations and as long as its not endangered then its legal to keep really any fish.. the local waters are too cold for invasive fish like snakeheads or piranhas to live in, and the pike would kill them before they got far anyway

tank size sounds a little small for most of the fish you mentioned, some type of wolf fish would be fun and very carnivorous...like maybe a hoplias malabaricus or erythrinus erythrinus

I dont mean to flame but...
"MAYBE snakehead, but theyre pretty invasive in much of the country.." snakeheads are illegal in the usa so there is no maybe unless you are prepared to pay the fines and maybe jail time.

"anyway.. i should note i checked local regulations and as long as its not endangered then its legal to keep really any fish.. the local waters are too cold for invasive fish like snakeheads or piranhas to live in, and the pike would kill them before they got far anyway" that is a fail quote. There is a species list that are banned in the states, i know your not saying anything directly but dont try to keep snakeheads or piranhas if they are illegal

Just get one of the large puffers :)

If you building the tank just make it bigger and get a big agressice cichlid, Butti or FH or something. or maybe a bichir. those fish you mentioned need massive tanks.

Building a tank thesize you are thinking is a waste of money in my opinion, unless it is going into a predetermined space that a standard tank wouldn't work in. If I'm correct, 100 gallon and smaller tanks can be had for a lot less than he materials would cost. Just my opinion.
