seeing this is worse than hearing about it

i went back to college last sunday, the 6th, and my mom called me monday night and told me my oscar has a big scratch on it. i was like ok my mom is just over reacting but when i showed up that friday this is what i saw

does any one know what could have happened this oscar is 11'' and is due to lay eggs in the next couple of weeks. the gash is 5''x1''x1/4'' deep

Ouch, is there anything in the tank it could have gotten caught on? Tankmates?

few rocks and 2 jack dempseys is all thats in the tank

I'm not sure what could have caused it, but this is a nightmare for a community tank IMHO...I'd try and quarantine that fish until you can get some healing action in place...you'll have to keep the water SUPER clean to avoid infections...It's odd it's on both sides of the fish?

Might have gotten trapped under a rock and ripped its way out?

ya i separated the tank left her with her male and put the pair of dempseys on the other side the temps at 84 and salt is in

Dang, no clue how it could have happened then. None of the tankmates are capable of inflicting a single wound like that.

we separated the tank after the fact because of the gash on the oscar and because the jack dempseys are going to breed soon and the oscars are going to breed again soon
