http://s916.photobucket.com/home/verrucktownezu if u wanna see more and some of my other cad work out of bordom, some images tryin to figure out this DIY filtration stuff- still dunno how to do that. got to fiberglass the whole outside with fiberglass mat and resin, lay mat in the corners and seams, and then im just going to lay resin on the rest of the inside. got laid off 2 days ago so i got plenty of time to work on it but not the funds

well main reason for picking that species is this. buy these guys @ 15 a pc, hopefully a breeding pair or 2. get some fry and grow them out to 5-7" or so and sell them for 300ish a pop. thats still hella cheaper than ive seen online. make some extra money for other projects so its not coming out of pocket. i know some people complain about feeding gets expensive but i live like 10 minutes from a river, i can drop a minnow trap, and catch more than enough food, catch a few bluegill for when they get bigger. feeding will be - well, free for the most part. maybe buy a 10-20 gallon and raise some convicts since they tend to breed like crazy.

I dont reccomend the convict plan. They might breed like crazy but they grow like snails. 1/3 of an inch feeders after a month kinda sucks for the time involved. Plus there too territorial to have more than a pair in nearly any size tank. I'm having too much fun with them in the piranha tank but the pair keeps beating the crap out of the lone female thats wandering around. I've toyed with the idea of killing her just so she couldnt get sick but never managed to catch her.

well piranhas are shoaling fish first of all so go by pairs 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 etc i prefer at least 6..but im sure something can go in the tank with it as long as its bigger than it like a arowana for example not saying it can be a tank mate just a example of length and size..but good luck with the piranhas p.s. i like the red bellies lol

Wrong wrong wrong wrong on so many counts. Not all p's are shoaling fish and tank mates are questionable at best. I would say smaller tank mates are better because of the grumpy nature of the piranha.

Your tank looks sweet! I for sure would like to see it when its finished! Where are you going to keep all those babies?I have a couple pairs of rbp that have spawned a few times.I have babies of all sizes n end up feeding most back to other predator fish.hell JP has a 12" blk diamond (beautiful fish) that he can't find a buyer for n its 350$ which is a steal I might add!

for babies i guess i would just buy a 55 gallon and tear it apart and make 3 more 100ish gallon plywood tanks. i actually have enough plywood left over from this build to make a smaller tank i think, dunno what size it'd be. my wife brought up the same type of question. what you gonna do if u can't sell them and end up with 100's of fish and no buyers. well. i dunno. make a pond to throw punk ass annoying neighborhood kids in?! sell 400$ fish for 100 a pc??

reptiles - i like rbp's but it seems like there everywhere, and not worth much money. if ima do it, i want the money makers. ive seen a couple sites where u can buy a dozen rbp's for 50$.

so there's no vertical side support around the tank? just plywood and fiberglass? not worried about bowing? perhaps fiberglass will be strong enough?? just trying to steal some ideas when I work on my plywood build (eventually but who knows when..)
anyway, if black piranhas are that easy to breed there would be farms breeding them like rbps. the only breeding colony of black piranha that I've heard of in the states was an abandoned 5000 gallon pond (could be bigger). You'll be lucky to be able to shoal a few of them at adult size let alone breeding them. even if you did manage to breed them and raise them to 5-6" you won't be able to get 300ish a pop, there are wild caught 3-4" or 6"ish ones at anywhere from $60 to around $100 or so, depends on who you buy it from.
I have problem selling my 12" at $350 so go figure.
as I mentioned before, you may have better chance at breeding caribes or pirayas than rhombeus.

yeah the tank has framing all around in it. lemme see if i can find u better pics, if not ill take some.
