Serrasalmus Rhombeus - black pirahna

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
thats the framing inside the tank, didn't put any on the outside so i could keep that smooth look. was going to do some more bracing in the middles of back and sides but was told by someone who has built many tanks that its not needed. fiberglass is hella strong. once i get the sides and back laid bowing shouldn't be an option.

i thought black's where higher than 60-100. all websites ive looked @ (which isn't many) want 400-500 for them. maybe i will do some other species of fish and build another tank to throw one in. still got a while to decide on stock, but when the tank is done i wanna knw wtf i want =)

I was talking about the vertical brace behind the plywoods, you don't worry about it bowing over time? I've seen some did the same as you, just a simple outer(or inner) frame then bolts the plywoods together without any braces behind the plywoods; also some with the brace behind plywoods.
something like this

now sure which websites did you look at $400-500 is usually for largeer size rhombeus (def. not the 5-6" size you had in mind). the $15 a piece you saw is regular black rhom from Peru, the most common ones and they are far cheaper than $400-500 a piece.
if you can breed piraya (which is very difficult) then can try to sell them maybe $50 a piece at around 3". Only see them that small at Shark Aquarium and were going for $99 a piece

I dont reccomend the convict plan. They might breed like crazy but they grow like snails. 1/3 of an inch feeders after a month kinda sucks for the time involved. Plus there too territorial to have more than a pair in nearly any size tank. I'm having too much fun with them in the piranha tank but the pair keeps beating the crap out of the lone female thats wandering around. I've toyed with the idea of killing her just so she couldnt get sick but never managed to catch her.

The problem with convicts is you must set up a breeding farm in which you take out the spawns and put them in another tank together so that you constantly have convicts breeding and fry of different ages growing at all times. There were some pretty good pics of convict breeding farms in the breeding section before all the pics went down. I've got a new batch that's about a month old and they can't be bigger then this - no exaggeration

so there's no vertical side support around the tank? just plywood and fiberglass? not worried about bowing? perhaps fiberglass will be strong enough?? just trying to steal some ideas when I work on my plywood build (eventually but who knows when..)
anyway, if black piranhas are that easy to breed there would be farms breeding them like rbps. the only breeding colony of black piranha that I've heard of in the states was an abandoned 5000 gallon pond (could be bigger). You'll be lucky to be able to shoal a few of them at adult size let alone breeding them. even if you did manage to breed them and raise them to 5-6" you won't be able to get 300ish a pop, there are wild caught 3-4" or 6"ish ones at anywhere from $60 to around $100 or so, depends on who you buy it from.
I have problem selling my 12" at $350 so go figure.
as I mentioned before, you may have better chance at breeding caribes or pirayas than rhombeus.
so right u r jp!

i think the tank im building right now im just going to try to get a bowfin and a couple other things that can live with them, not sure what. would like a giant snakehead but since i live in the states thats amost impossible to get. when i find a good deal on another 55 gallon tank im going to get a couple Ternetzi Piranha. i really like the colors on them. http://www.aquascapeonline.com/products/ternetzi-piranha-3in-4in-pygocentrus-ternetzi.html going to also try and set up a 30 gallon ciclid community for my 5 yr old son @ some point. then i will just get another tank and get a rhom and see how big i can get his ass. who knows - got ideas for days

jp that tank in that picture is so overbuilt. thats a layout for like a 1000+ gallon tank not a 350ish. http://www.aquascapeonline.com/aqua...iranhas-genus-serrasalmus-black-piranha-peru/ is the black ones from peru, i was wrong on size. about 10" is when they get high and 14" they r stupid high. http://www.aquascapeonline.com/aqua...anhas-genus-serrasalmus-black-piranha-guyana/ are kinda high. http://www.aquascapeonline.com/aqua...genus-serrasalmus-black-piranha-xingu-brazil/ is 200$ for a 6".

Someone's got the itch. Snakeheads aren't as difficult to find as most people would think...it's just hushhush since they're illegal but they're definetely out there.

You'd probably want bigger then a 55 for ternz as they grow bigger then red belly unless you literally mean a couple but i know you're just kickin around ideas.

Do you have any current tanks going? What's your stock if so?

oh and jp no im not worried about bowing over time really. i have ALOT of faith in fiberglass. worked with the stuff tons. hell airplanes have alot of fiberglass on them.
