Serrasalmus Rhombeus - black pirahna

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
yea I know my tank is over engineered, but since I won't be using fiberglass (just sealant or liquid rubber)so better be safe than sorry later, the additional lumbers aren't that expensive anyway.
Xingu rhom is more expensive cuz it's only available from one river, the $15 a piece one that you saw are Peru rhom, the most common ones in the hobby.
ternetzi get bigger than rbps so 55g won't be a good idea due to the narrow width. if you could go for a 75g. same length as the 55g but wider.

ahh yeah true, i more than likely will buy a 55 gallon, take it apart and use the glass to make a 150ish. could make like 3 tanks out of one 55g. i like the fish in ur profile pic. those red eyes r just evil. how big of a tank you plan on building. man liquid rubber is HIGH - thats the reason im waterproofing mine on the inside with fiberglass resin and just layin cloth in the corners/seams. HELLA CHEAPER.

yea, if you plan on building your own tank then just use the glass off a 55g that would be good idea.
Sweatwater sealant from Aquatic Ecosystems will cost around $150 for the plywood tank I designed and saw an other member's thread in the DIY section on some "wetsuit" material from this company http://www.neptunecoatingscorp.com/index.htm
it's a Neptune coating and he said he could get 5 gallon for around $130. I just need too much thickness, 10 mile would probably be fine so 5 gallon should be more than enough.
I thought about fiberglass but I never worked with it before so no idea how easy or hard it is to work with and heard the resin could give off some toxic fume while curing? I'll be working in a basement with a tinny window so would like to avoid that if possible.
if you have good experience with fiberglass and resin, please shin some light on it if you don't mind. you can pm me if you don't want to do it on this thread.

i thought about the wetsuit stuff but i dont know that dude so i can't hardly trust him to send me a product. fberglass is pretty ez. just mix it how it says and lay it on with a brush for corners and a roller on the flat spots. when it dries its HARD. and water isn't getting threw it. a gallon of resin here is 38$ + tax. and the mat im using is 3mm which is pretty thick. ill have all the mat i need for about 20$. what im personally gonna do is mix the first batch of resin with aceton. this will make it absorb into the wood real good, then after it dried im taking 80 grit sand paper for a quick ruffing up and applying the second coat normally. ill get extra strenght and waterproofness all in one.

Thanks for the fiberglass info. I'll look into it. will the resin give off and fume while curing?
where do you get the resin and fiberglass mat? do you just resin for the second coat or resin+fiberglass mat? (total of 2 layers)

it has a smell but its not like deadly or nothing. i wouldn't sit there and smell it tho, put it on and walk away. im getting mine at a store that sells autobody stuff. you can do it however u want. since the mat im getting is so thick im doin one layer and callin it a day. my process will go

mix some resin with its hardener, add 10% acetone and apply to inside and out of tank with a roller and brush. doing sections @ a time. like my back and sides. that way before it cures completely i can stick mat to it so it will kinda hold it in place. then put a thick coat of resin over the mat @ let it dry. making sure to mash all the air bubbles out of it.

the inside im going to put some resin in the corners, lay the strips of mat down, and resin the whole thing real good.

cool thanks.

it'll probably be at least a year or two until I start my build so I could look into it more.

yeah i'd just buy a small thing of resin and mat and play around with it. plenty of time to practice

I have a rhom and i've seen the thing cut fish in half.
The idea of breeding in captivity doesn't seem realistic.
