Setting up my 330g ray tank upgrade

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
For substrate I will be using BD Trading 'Aquarium Sand', mostly from my current ray tank plus an extra half bag or so to keep it fairly thin (0.5" approx). It's £12 for 25kg so not bad on price. I have considered pea gravel and still haven't completely ruled it out. I would like to incorporate some medium and a few large round stones as well to try and get a nice natural look without reducing floor space too much.

Rays I am planning are my current two: 1 un-ID'd (see avatar) and a dark retic.
I would like to pick up another retic to make a pair and am looking into a mf pair of P14 pups too, hopefully from a UK breeder.

I am now trawling through some DIY articles to come up with a stand design. I think I'll keep it fairly straight forward but would like to include easy access to change the mech media in the sump so am still thinking around that one.

Spent this evening giving the tank a good clean. It's 2 years old and has been used as a marine setup until now and had some residue, sand etc still in it. As it's so big it wouldn't be practical to put it on it's side to clean (which is what I've done previously) so we lifted one end and washed from that end down whilst syphoning the water back out from the other end into a bucket. The bucket was outside and able to overflow but it served to catch the sand etc so it didn't end up all over the drive.

It's surprising how long it takes to clean down a tank that size!

Here's a pic of my mate John helping with the syphoning at the back end.

PS I'm still working on that stand design..... details coming soon :naughty:

make sure if you use both fbf's that you add alotta fish. you need to feed the bacteria. the best yway to move it in doors is with dollies. easy enough to make. get a really fat piece of plywood. around 2-4 inches in thickness. make it say 30" wide and 40" long(or whatever dimensions you need. then add four or more heavy duty wheels. then place a thick carpet padding to prevent damage to the glass. make 2 of theese dollies. place one on each side of the tank(under the tank) and roll the tank round the house :)

Well with 5 rays plus some other fish there will be a fair amount of mess to deal with, hence the sump, fludised beds and 24/7 water change. Hopefully this will give enough bio processing to deal with ammonia/nitrite with the water changer keeping the nitrates down low. I will stock gradually though and keep a check to make sure it's all up to the task ;)

I've been considering making something like that to move it through the house but might just rope in lots of friends, relatives, neighbours, passers by etc :grinno:

Congratz on the new tank. Hurts me just thinking about the weight of all that glass lol. Personally I prefer glass over acrylic with large tanks, except for the moving part of course.

Nice tank mate...What the missus say when you told her you were 'rearranging the front room'? Looking forward to seeing this filled!

Thanks guys.

It's going where the old tank is which has a bit of space around it so not too much rearrangement required. Think it's bigger than she expected but to be honest, even after measuring it all out on the floor, I felt that too when I first saw it. Funny how quickly I'm getting used to it's size though :lol2:

yeh if i were you i would only use one fbf. main thing is ur tank aint 600gallons. id use 2 if i didnt have a sump and other forms of biological filtration. problem is you wont have enough poop to support 2 bacterial colonies and they will both die if they arent fed enough. you may needanother one if you had another 10 large fish. the only way fluidized bed filters work is with large volumes of water and heavy bioloads.
