Severum Experiences??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've got a pair of greenies right now in my 125. What started out as pair of rather dull, boring looking fish are turning into a pair of stunning beauties.

I have 2 gold/green severums. they are not really aggressive to others
I also have 6 red-head severums. they are much more aggressive. I had to separate almost every single into different tanks from each other, because they were killing each other.

i have a gold sev he about 7in he was the first fish i put in my tank that was almost a year ago he is the king of my tank

I've had mixed experiences with my green severum that I have currently. I had one in there for a couple months then bought another green severum and the original one beat its *** for the first few days then lightened up a little bit on it but I eventually got rid of the new comer. They are fairly peacefull but I would recommend keeping them in a more aggressive cichlid community or they might dominate the weaker ones. I've been feeding mine bloodworms, krill, and flakes. I have 5 Red Neck Severum or Rotkeil's whatever you prefer to call them on the way for my 240 then the Green is getting the boot back to the lfs. Here's a quick pic of my green severum and a pick of what the Rotkeil should look like ~Trent

I have two severums that are about 4 inches long.. i raised them since babies in a community tank filled with various Lake Malawi cichlids..they are peaceful with each other and also peaceful with everyone else..and vise versa.. can i expect trouble down the road? I really can't amagine them changing their sweet disposition..ps Beautiful pictures!!!!!!!!!!!

i have 5, 2 8" 9gold breeding pair) and a small green and a small gold, they are placid fish, but if need be they will stick up for them selves, they can be keppt in a community tank or in a predator tank ( look at deisil macks, his are in witha bunch of pbass), i love them, very smart and have a great personality. i would have more if i could.

I love my severums. I have a gorgeous gold/red, and later got a green sev. Both eat right out of my hand now. My green one used to be a real pistol, antagonizing my oscars, stealing food right from their mouths, but I had to like his personality.

Since I've moved things around, my severums are the biggest fish in the tank, but they are by no means mean. They're actually quite tolerant of all tankmates without much aggression. Someitmes my green sev will have a tiff with my eartheater, but no harm done.

I have had a 6" gold severum for almost 4yrs! I got her since she was about 1"2". She tried to spawn with Festivum several times, wiht no results, with which I'm happy because I didn't have room for any spawns.

She basically runs the tank only swimming away when the convict gets grumpy lol. Most of the time she stands her ground.

She as a great disposition at times i can hand feed here, even a slight pet. Other times she attacks the siphon heheh Loves earthworms and can be a lil gluttonous when feeding time(seen her chase here tank mates away from food).

She's housed with the other fish in my sig.

I have a pair of green sevrums in my 125, and the male OWNS the tank. I've got 2 JS'd, 1 'Belly Crawler' Pike, 1 Salvini, and 1 convict. My male sev beats all my other fish with the exception of my larger JD. I bought them nearly 6 months after my JDs and my male is already as large as my male JD. They were purchased (under 1" long) in april and are already 4" long and meaty.

Although mine is an ass, I have had sevrums in the past that were very timid, great fish. The meanest fish I have ever seen was a full grown male Sevrum, he would kill anything in his tank, and try to attack you if you got near the glass.

All in all, i'd say these are wonderful fish, and like most cichlids have vaired personalities.
