Sex my Dovii's

Fingers crossed for you that you end up with at least one male or better yet a pair. I lucked out when I bought my jags. I'd called around and only found one shop within 100 miles that had any jags. When I got there they had 3 left and one had been beaten up fairly bad and they wouldn't sell it to me. I bought the other two hoping is end up with a pair of at least one male. After growing out for around 5 weeks they paid up, spawned and hatched their first brood. I have 5 of those fry growing out in a 40 gal right now and their acting like they might spawn again soon. I got lucky, maybe you will too. Right now they're stressed and in a new environment, give them some time. From what I can see in the pics the tank is kind of sparse, if it were me is add more rocks and cashes for them to hide in until they become more comfortable. That might help lower the aggression level in the tank.

When you say you got them from a member are you referring to someone on this site or a local Club? I don't know much about dovii but I'd think that the breeder would have been able to vent them when he netted them and you picked them up. Since you said you'd have been willing to pay $200 for an F-1 male, why didn't you just order one from Jeff raps or one of the other well acclaimed fish merchants on here? That way you'd have gotten exactly what you wanted.

If you do end up with a bunch of confirmed females in a few months time maybe we can work out a deal for one of them.

I would appreciate if I could work out a deal for a true male as I said I am new to dovii I usually only keep the monster catfish/ arowana/ oscars and such so I am a newb If I could have known that I could have gotten a male I would have done so in the first place they guy I bought em off is a member of this forum he was like they are all too small to be sexed yet he had a gorgeous male in his show tank so I don't know if he just was screwing me or if he was trying to be genuinely honest

just to add a side note, it took me a year and half to find my male jag. I bought the dovii in my avatar from jeff rapps at tangledupincichlids.com. he's a great guy and has awesome fish. I don't order from anyone but him.

Just to be clear I don't have any dovii, I ess saying that if in a few months you end up with a bunch of females I might be interested in purchasing one from you.

If you bought them from another member as un-sexed that sounds to me like you agreed and/or understood that the may all grow out to become females.

Yeah I know like I said in a post on this thread I may have made a mistake but he did say he was good at dovii so he may have known they were female and just told me they were too small just to get them off his hands or he may have been trying to be honest anyway that aside I can't change it now and if they all turn out to be f1 Dovii females I will try to sell them and at least make my money back :/

Out of curiosity why do you want a female ? I think ima sell my dovii if they are female and but an f0 or f1 umbee or f0 or f1 jag pair it's too hard to get a male dovii anyway

For now it's just a thought, but I was considering trying to get a female dovii to mate with my male jag because I'd like to see how the offspring developed. It's not something I'll attempt without a lot more research and advise because I wouldn't want any harm to come to either fish. I know others have had that combination occur and produce viable fry. I've just never seen what they develop into as adults. I believe someone called that hybrid a Jagovii.

That would be sweet :) would like to see the turn out of that

EDIT: BTW I lied there is one more pic of the small one look closely at the dorsal fin it's better in person but there are black dots and also I switched him to the 20 5 mins ago and is dorsal and bottom two fins were outlined in a very subtle but bright blue it was hard to spot out though but look at his dorsal fin in the pic it has black dots this questions my belief that all three are female
